MKopack Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Don't know if this is the correct place for this, but I couldn't think of a better one. I guess I shouldn't be surprised... Since retirement from active military service, "He who shall not be named" has made a second career as an investor and director of public and private companies. He is chairman of Ethicspoint, a leading provider of risk-management and compliance software-as-a-service, including secure, anonymous reporting of ethical violations in the workplace. Previous ABMC chairmen include Pershing, George C. Marshall, Jacob L. Devers, Mark W. Clark, Andrew J. Goodpaster, P. X. Kelley, who served twice, Frederick F. Woerner, and Frederick M. This is something we have to live with every day we're here. Nobody makes any sudden moves around here in fear that the island will start to sway... I'm glad people voted for this guy, because apparently he's the only one that knows that this island just floats on the water.
StoleIt Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 (CBS/KHOU) LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas - There are conflicting reports of a mass grave found near Hardin, Texas, approximately 50 miles northeast of Houston. Liberty County sheriff's deputies are currently on the scene at the home where a tipster reportedly told them 25 to 30 dismembered bodies are buried CBS affiliate KHOU reports that a law enforcement source said that a mass grave was found by police. According to the Houston Chronicle, the tip came from a psychic and no bodies have been confirmed on the site. Property owner Joe Bankston said he's shocked by the reports of bodies on his property. "This is like something out of a novel," Bankston said by phone from Dallas, reports KHOU. Bankston said his daughter lives in the house. He said there's blood on the porch and in the house because his daughter's former boyfriend tried to commit suicide a couple of weeks ago. "He got drunk and cut his wrist," Bankston said. "It took me all day to clean the inside of the house. I'm not sure I got it [the blood] all." The boyfriend, an Army soldier who was AWOL, is now in a military psychiatric ward in Killeen, according to Bankston. He said a police report was filed with the sheriff's department after the suicide attempt. Bankston said he's owned the property for a little over three years. He admitted his son, Joe, is a convicted sex offender, but said he hasn't lived in Hardin for over a year. "He lived with us for a little while, but had to go to Michigan about a year ago for a court appearance and never came back," Bankston said. "Last I heard, he was in Ohio." The tip came in to police Tuesday afternoon, and the tipster claimed that dozens of dismembered bodies were buried in the grave, according to local paper The Cleveland Advocate. About 15 sheriff's department vehicles and at least one cadaver dog are on the scene. The Beaumont FBI office has also been asked to assist in the investigation. KHOU reports that police are waiting to obtain a warrant to further search the property. Texas Equusearch founder Tim Miller says his organization has been contacted and are on standby to provide equipment and other resources as needed. SurelySerious Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Loud cell-phone talker removed from quiet car by police said she felt "disrespected" by the entire incident. Salem police reported she had been on the phone non-stop since the train pulled out of Oakland, Calif. 16 hours earlier Saw this commentary on the dilution of 'respect' as a value in American society, which references the above WTF: 'Disrespect' Is Something You Earn: Everybody Thinks He's Rodney Dangerfield Now, Without The Sense Of Humor By Peter Funt After informing the airline customer-service agent on the telephone that she had made an error in my itinerary, I was taken aback by her reply. She said I had "disrespected" her. A few days later I read about a small but telling incident aboard an Amtrak train traveling up the West Coast, involving a woman who talked incessantly on her cellphone in a so-called "Quiet Car." According to KATU television in Portland, passengers said the woman was being "disrespectful." Police finally removed her from the train, whereupon she told reporters that she felt "disrespected" by the entire incident. Apparently "respect" has emerged as society's favorite go-to word when we don't like someone or something, or they don't like us. Listen closely to the patter of politicians and athletes, reality-TV stars and gang members, and you'd think all they want from life nowadays is to be respected. Not since Rodney Dangerfield's prime—"I get no respect: When I was born the doctor slapped my mother"—has there been so much blather about "respect" and "disrespect." One of John Boehner's early acts upon becoming House speaker was to tell "60 Minutes" that President Obama had "disrespected" him. The alleged insult was the president's statement that Republicans were "holding hostage" middle-class tax relief while trying to win cuts for the wealthy. Most of us are schooled in basic respect for elders, flag, clergy, courts and so forth. We were taught that respect was something that was earned. Somewhere along the line, however, the concept has been inverted. Respect is no longer measured so much by what we achieve as what we demand. It's difficult to pinpoint the precise moment when a term takes on new meaning, but Aretha Franklin's 1967 anthem, "Respect," was an early indicator of this particular rhetorical shift. Back then, the song underscored reasonable goals of the civil rights and women's rights movements. Today, the concept of "respect" has been commandeered by those with far less laudable objectives. In a recent report on California gang violence, the Oakland Tribune asked a police lieutenant why conditions are so bad. "It is usually some form of disrespect," he explained, "or inferred disrespect." Understandably, those in the poorest circumstances have little to cling to if not self-respect. However, the misappropriation of the concept now extends from America's violence-torn neighborhoods to the halls of Congress. It resonates in modern music and is amplified by social networking. Professional athletes, who command enormous power to influence the thinking and rhetoric of millions of Americans, are increasingly obsessed with the notion of "respect." For example, after five seasons with the Titans, quarterback Vince Young declared that coach Jeff Fisher had "disrespected" him during the entire time he spent in Tennessee. When Donovan McNabb joined the Washington Redskins, his former teammates on the Philadelphia Eagles accused Mr. McNabb of disrespecting them. Then, when Mr. McNabb was benched by his new team, he said the Redskins coach, Mike Shanahan, was disrespecting him. Writing in the Detroit News, Bob Wojnowski said the Pistons basketball season has been marked by "nastiness, pouting and confusion." This, he concluded, was due to "a breakdown in respect for the game, respect for fans, respect for each other." He went on to note that the players showed a "lack of respect" for their coach and also disrespected the team's owner. In baseball, the respect thing has become so twisted that if a player dares celebrate a successful play he's in danger of being beaned his next time up because he "disrespected" the other team. And then there's Edgar Renteria, last season's aging World Series hero for the San Francisco Giants, who said the team showed a "lack of respect" and "total disrespect" by offering him only a million dollars to play in 2011. Nearly 200 years ago, Webster defined respect as: "That estimation or honor in which men hold the distinguished worth or substantial good qualities of others." In the modern online Urban Dictionary, where entries are rated by readers, the leading definition of respect is: "A quality seriously lacking in today's society." Sometimes in our living language we allow a good word to go bad, and in doing so redefine ourselves. Today, those most adamant in demanding respect are often the least likely to deserve any. Guest Shadow Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Saw this commentary on the dilution of 'respect' as a value in American society, which references the above WTF: 'Disrespect' Is Something You Earn: Everybody Thinks He's Rodney Dangerfield Now, Without The Sense Of Humor By Peter Funt Well said by Mr. Funt. People automatically demand respect, but fewer and fewer actually earn respect. By "disrespecting" someone who hasn't actually earned any respect, you emasculate them even further, and their only perceived solution to recoup their loss is through violence. Referencing ClearedHot's story, you can tell she automatically commands respect wherever she goes. Look at her, she's in top physical form and is no doubt the most engaging, intelligent person you'll ever meet. Please. Put the phone down and shut up. What could you possibly talk about for 16 hours straight??!!??
outbreak Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Danger of Cell Phones During Takeoff and Landing Really? I throw the BS flag. CONUS, I almost always forget to turn of my cell phone, and few aircraft could be less "shielded" than a Herk. The failure rate is the same as it is OCONUS, where I don't carry my phone.
Guest Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 (edited) Danger of Cell Phones During Takeoff and Landing Really? Yep. This shit is lethal. In fact, we're testing cellphones and iPads in our warheads now on the new AIM-120 BB (Blackberry) and AIM-120 i/P (iPad/iPhone). We're in the final stages of selecting carriers, ATT was in the lead but keeps dropping calls during test shots. Homeland security is also looking at how to deal with evidence uncovered in bin Laden's lair about an al Qeada plot to sneak 1000 cell phones onto airliners. Remember when the Hindenburg flew past a cell tower? Imagine 1000 Hindenburgs. Of course for OPSEC reasons I need you guys to promise not to tell anyone about this, ok?
