Herk Norris Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Question for a Flight Doc Type I'm a current/qualified Herk bubba with a few keloids I'd like to have removed. It doesnt bother me at all, but it is an eyesore (like a nasty mole) and I'd like to have it removed Is this DQ'ing/DNIF'ing at all and will the AF pay for the removal process??? Thanks

Thanks I don't think it will be an issue...I'll run it by one of my docs...the problem with the keloids is that they may cause problems when uniform/life support gear or other equipment constantly rub against them and they become painful. I think you could have them removed and not be DNIFed or only DNIFed for a short time...but I'll check.

For Keloids, it can be problematic in that surgical excision may just buy you another keloid scar. The local base should refer you to a plastic surgeon, especially for the face or an obvious places if they are an eye sore. You would be DNIF for the time to get the stitches out only (7-10 days). Assuming you are active duty, it is really a local policy whether they will pay for or if they designate it as interfering functionally - if on the face and they can make a case for mask interference they will pay for it. If in the reserves, you will probably have more trouble getting referral unless it is designated as service related. Hope that helps.
