Our X-c country is typically 6 flights leaving on friday RTB sunday. Dudes from Moody go to charleston, Key west, new orleans, D.C area, and many places in Fla.

On mine we went to Corpus, then Austin for a bite to eat and got stuck there due to Wx. We were trying to go up to Omaha, NE. The nice thing about Tones is that many of the places Tweets and -38's go for X-countries, we fly there everyday for lunch on our out and backs! In T-34's, you could go coast to coast! We had dudes go to Vegas from P-Cola in the mighty 34! The Navy just doesn't care. All we needed was a paved surface at least 3000 foot long, controlled, uncontrolled, didn’t matter! BONE Co-driver Posted February 27, 2005 Posted February 27, 2005 In 38's you do 1 solo out and back as well as your standard cross country weekend (dual). I think that we were a bit different for our cross country weekend. We had terrible weather all thru training, so half of our flights that weekend were 2 ship tactical. We flew from Laughlin to Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood, to JAX, to Scott AFB, to Ft. Worth-Alliance, and back to Laughlin. It was an awesome weekend!

We landed at Midway airfield and had the Benz pick us for some downtown action and eventually crashed at the Hilton downtown... Per Diem - not a factor since our Reserve Pilot was from Chicago and a lawyer/Real Estate guy and had the hook-up... Steaks, Ale, fine cigars... if they ever caught wind of that one - I'm sure it would have been all over.... Chicago Hilton: $400.00 a weekend night Gov plane: $10,000.00 Petro: $2,500.00 IP: $600.00 Going X-country w/your best friend(s)IP included to the WINDY CITY, and eat'n $70 Steaks, drink'n like a fool, smok'en cigars like a banshee in downtown Chicago on AETC time ... When I went through C-12s we had guys going to California, Washington (D.C. and state), Key West, Colorado, and all points in between. Don't know if that's changed since '01, though.
FourFans Posted February 28, 2005 Posted February 28, 2005 Alright Alright here's the skinny on T-44 x-country: Out of corpus your limits are your crew duty day...that's about it. The sylabus calls for 2 "events" however, that doesn't necessariy mean two flights. That being said, you can reach either coast in about 2 hops anyway. Depart Friday, Saturday off, return Sunday. Hot Spots: - Vegas (obviously) :D - LA - Seattle - Key West - Washington DC I went to DC. You fly into Andrews and flip the navy lodging office (which you can't find) the bird on your way off base because your squadron was cool enough to put DC on your orders not Andrews AFB. Then you take a 7 dollar cab ride to the nearest metro (subway) station (i think it's the green line) and ride on in to the mall for about $1.35. After that it's a 2 block walk to the capital hilton which is just above the max lodging rate (its on the hotels section of baseops.net). Then you spend all sunday walking the mall (i recommend the air and space museum and the holocost museum). Then show up at about 12 on sunday (per the IP) and fly home. Some dudes are lucky enough to have an IP who want to go to the studs home town. In that case the only limfac is finding contract gas at a field close to home. The Navy may do everything bassackwards, but you can have some serious fun while your here too. Oh and don't forget...after your instrument checkride, you get a team solo out and back. No babysitter following you either. Just you an another student, 2ish hours out, ground for one hour, fly back. I recommend P-Cola or Chennault. Enjoy, J

We can pretty much send people anywhere you can con your IP into going. NAS Whidbey in Seattle is a popular place in the summer, along w/ New England and any point in between! My XC was in January, so there were some weather limits (no flying thru icing and no getting iced on the ground), but I still managed to go to Reno for the weekend. Lost at the tables on Friday, but spent Saturday skiing at Squaw Valley. A great little vacation from S. Texas for a northerner like myself! Overall, there's a lot of opportunity out there, you just need to talk to an IP. And start talking early! AirNav solo went to Chennault. Nothing beats the $1 lunch there. It was pretty cool seeing the look on the Laughin TOne studs when we told them we were solo.

Popular destinations are usually Vegas, DC, and Key West. And you don't fly on Saturday so you can party it up on Fri and Sat night. I tore DC apart. HD

North to Houston, W to Austin, S past San Antonio to the Valley, then back north to the house. Check in the box. Bring a lunch and pray that there's another pair of studs in a bird following you so you'll have some fun radio conversations... it's gonna be a long day with one-to-a-full stop. LOL! Good times... Get gas at Ellington if you can make it that far, if not got to Shreveport then on to Dallas. At least if you break in Shreveport you can go to the Casio. Dallas has tons of bars, but I have not been there in a few years. Hey all you aggies...whoop...There is a place in Dallas with a bunch of bars in the same place, you can stumble from one right to the next, is that downtown?

The downtown place CH is talking about would be debellum (not sure of the spelling) but its pretty much a couple blocks from downtown. Shreveport does have the casinos and a couple bars downtown that are pretty cool. It's a great place to break or get weathered - the FBO there is sweet and you get hooked up with all kinds of stuff. On my T-6 cross country, we broke in College Station Friday night (Gig'em Aggies), and then weathered at Ellington for a day and a half on Sunday. Not bad.

Go to the Library, Flying Saucer, or PourHouse (my favorite) and if you are there on a Friday or Saturday, you HAVE to go to 8o's (pronounced "eight - oh's). Awesome outside venue, with a great club inside. Find your way to Sundance Square. Enough said. More a$$ there per SQ mile than you can shake a stick at. City Streets Club is OK as well, but, not necessarily my type of spot...more of a Junior College Hangout. //EDIT// Forgot to mention...you can land at either Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base (aka Carswell) or at Fort Worth Alliance. Whatever, if you go to FW, go eat at Uncle Julio's which is on Interstate 30 and Camp Bowie. Voted 9 years in a row by Reader's igest BEST MEXICAN food in the country...well worth the visit and wait. FOr hotel, STAY at the Fort Worth Worthington Hotel...4-5 star and under the per diem. Your IP will thank you for it!!! I would make a stop (a pull a few CB's in the process), on my way to Austin - yeah - we -are - the - champs - barely - going - to - win - 5 -games - next - year - Texas. As for Austin, there's a spot not far from 6th street they call the "Warehouse District"...I distinctly remember a couple rooftop bars, open-air, good music, and to echo the words of C-21...'More a$$ there per SQ mile than you can shake a stick at.' Then of course if you come through Houston, definitely trek to College Station (if you need more info on it, it's my old stompin' ground). Hit Northgate, and if you're still sober from either the Chicken or the Dry Bean you can try the Tap on the other side of town which lives up to the words of C-21 above. Get yourself some cajun food at the New Orleans type resturaunt, get some flaming Dr Peppers at the bar which name escapes me right now, find some hot chicks in one of the clubs, and have some fun. Can you tell I really miss hanging out at Austin?

That thing's a fast machine with long legs I thought. Do me a favor and stop for gas in Minden, LA. Call ahead to the FBO (Larry Blackman) and he'll make sure you've got a car or grub. The identifier is "F24" and it's about 30NM east of Shreveport. They just got government contract fuel and are hoping to get more customers. I'm trying to help em out.

The Stockyards is cool if you like to where sh1tkickers and WWE championship buckles and have "man camel toe"... Go to the Stockyards to visit, not to hang. BillyBob's is OVER-Fn-RATED...don't get caught in that tourist trap they try to call a bar. 8o's and the other bars I mentioned above are ALL in Sundance Square, as well as the Worthington Hotel. You can land at either Alliance or Naval Fort WOrth...the a$$ at AFW is worth the visit in my opinion. For those less adventerious types, you can hang out with the crue-cut aggies (both male and female) down at the Dixie Chicken and sing "Irene" (been there, done that...ashamed") and go eat at Taco Cabana after listening to "He's a fighten' Texas Aggie, and He Just Don't Give a Damn". College Station is an awesome town - "whooop". If you pull the trip just right, you'll do it over 4 days...College Station (the Chicken) on Thursday, any bar in Austin on Friday, Sundance Square in Fort Worth on Saturday, then fly your worn liver back home on Sunday. Guest guardhopefull Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I think I already know the answer to this and won't like it but one of my old classmates told me there is a rule against rooming with other classmates on UPT cross countries? I’ve never seen or heard of it but thought someone here might know. Our squadron is too poor to pay for separate rooms off base so they are telling us they will only cover $70 total (for two people) if we go off base. And $35 on base, allowing separate rooms. So in other words we are being told we have to room with other studs. Thanks
Toro Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Not sure exactly what kind of 'rulebook' this supposedly is coming from, but the only thing I've ever heard like this is a lodging rule - they're not supposed to room you together or put officers in enlisted rooms (which share a bathroom). I never shared a room in UPT, but I've had to share a room on more than one occassion for F-15 XCs.
