TacoJohn Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Article from the Associated Press discussing the advantages of Satellite based flight data recording over traditional "black boxes" in regards to commercial aviation. Interesting read. Aviation Thinks Outside The Black Box.
Guest Justshootme Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 A great idea, but I seriously doubt there is enough unused bandwith floating around to support this. What if the world suddenly had 30k additional satphone users, simultaneously talking all day long? Good luck.

What if the world suddenly had 30k additional satphone users, simultaneously talking all day long? Good luck. agreed. I think the only way it would really work is to send short data bursts, so you still won't have real time information, but better than nothing. Companies would have to buy block time for each jet on each frequency or something like that. Not to mention, it's one thing for FDRs... could you imagine real time reporting of CVRs?!? That is a can of worms I do NOT want to see opened.
Gravedigger Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 I think it's a cool idea, but like you guys mentioned, we don't yet have the space assets to support this. Space is already used to track aircraft, but it doesn't provide near the amount of data as a FDR.
08Dawg Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 Not sure how you'd export this to international aviation, but with ADS-B coming online, I wonder if there'd be any way to tie that in with this idea?
