Guest bnhernandez324
I am just curious with all the pilots. What is one of the main reason you think plane crashes happen? Is it the plane, pilot, both, ATC what? My main area of interest is proper flight instruction and safety in flying. I became concerned in this area after being a flight attendant and having a very scary flight experience. I would love some feed back! Thanks! bfargin
About 50% pilot error and the other 50% are attributed to other factors such as mechanical error, bird strikes, weather, sabotage, etc. But really I'd guess that there is usually a combination of factors that cause an actual crash to happen. There are lots of sources out there to investigate reasons accidents happen. The FAA and NTSB also keep stats of different type accidents and their probable cause. http://planecrashinfo.com/cause.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_accidents_and_incidents http://www.aviation-law-news.com/html/causes.html Edited March 19, 2011 by bfargin

skibum
I think the main cause is that a lot of stewardesses are getting fat, old & ugly, and the hot ones don't put out like they used to. A lot of pilots try really hard to fly well when they want to impress hot stewardesses. Now everyone is distracted by porn instead. Either that or it's because the ground is getting harder which makes crashes worse. p.s. WTF is a flight attendant?

HuggyU2
If you're located in SLO, that means you probably have been a flight attendant on Sky West/United Express (e.g. "stewardess",... nothing wrong with that term, since I'm over 40. Actually,... nothing wrong with that term, period). So... you were probably flying on the EMB-120, or even the 1900 when they had those. If so, you were probably flying with a mixed bag of experience. Chances are, if you knew the experience of some of the pilots, you'd have been a bit put off or surprised. Not that they were not capable. But they were not 3000 hour pilots either. Don't know what your "scary experiences were, but this website is primarily made up of military pilots. You probably won't find many military pilots at Sky West. The backgrounds are dramatically different, and probably won't do much for you research. HU&W
What is one of the main reason you think plane crashes happen? Most crashes result from excessive negative vertical velocity combined with an unsuitable landing surface. The others are usually caused by excess closure.
StoleIt
Acceleration has never killed anyone, it's suddenly stopping that's the issue.
Skitzo
I'm not a physics major but acceleration is change in velocity over a period of time. Therefore acceleration kills, because F = M*A

bowe96
Most crashes result from excessive negative vertical velocity combined with an unsuitable landing surface. The others are usually caused by excess closure. Doesn't the latter cause the former? Therefore 100% of crashes would be caused by "excessive negative vertical velocity combined with an unsuitable landing surface".

LockheedFix
As a Wing FSO at a deployed location with quite a mixed bag of airframes, I have found one factor has played into all the mishaps we've had as well as 75% of the near misses: Aircrew wearing sunglasses on their heads in the Dining Facility on their way to the aircraft.

I almost crashed into another jet just this week because the moron flying lead took his reflective belt off when he stepped into the airplane. I barely even saw him. Guest 12XU2A3X3
Fat flight attendants moving the center of gravity from forward to aft causes the aircraft to become unstable. EDIT: Also, everytime you leave your PT shirt untucked, an airplane loses its wings. these are facts
