Breckey Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Article w/ Video ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Air Force investigators say an Air Force helicopter crashed at the south of Kirtland Air Force Base at about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday. They said the UH1N helicopter went down 20 miles southwest of the base near Rio Puerco and Highway 6 west of Los Lunas. Air force officials said two instructor pilots, a flight engineer and a student flight engineer were on-board when the chopper crashed. The helicopter was flying over a remote training area that the air force uses to teach aerial operations like hovering and simulated hoisting for rescue and recovery operations. Officials said none of the helicopter passengers were injured. Investigators said they are trying to figure out what went wrong with the training mission. "It's extremely rare for this to happen. We fly upwards of 20,000 flight hours every year. This doesn't normally happen," said James Cardozo, commander of 58th Special Operations Wing. Officials said the last time a helicopter crashed during this special operations training was two years ago. They said the investigation on the case may take months. When do we get the CVSLP again?
