Just wondering if Creech guys are still getting incentive pay? I know it's spelled out in the 36-2110, but I had heard a rumour that congress had unfunded it for FY12.

Before anyone goes aggro I did try the search function, and I'm trying to find out how big of a former pornstar mansion I can rent.

The latest word(about 12 months ago) was that it got renewed for CALENDAR year 2011, but wasn't going to be funded for 2012. Haven't heard anything official to counter that yet.

This might sound stupid, but are there any rumors of Cannon getting an incentive pay?

That would be a nice rumor. I'm sure local community 'leaders' would find a way to absorb any increase in our pay though. Mostly, though, I'd just like them to station a few more doctors in the Med Group. And maybe some specialists too so we don't have to drive up to 230 miles to see one.

There is no official budget passed for 2012 because we have an incompetent government! But yes, for 2011 calendar year, there is AIP - $350 a month unless you've been there for 3+ years, then it's $750. There is a 99.9% chance that it's all going away as of 1 Jan 2012.

AIP was introduced because of the lack of resources at Creech. When it was conceptualized, there was no gas station, DFAC, or gym. However, there is now a gas pump (only pumps 87 though), a decent DFAC (24hr grab and go but limited Hot food times) , and a small gym w/ an outdoor track (in my opinion, out of regulation).

Gas / travel time to and from Las Vegas wasn't a factor. HOWEVER, with the current administration, gas prices have risen by over $1.50 a gallon and the bus has been terminated w/ the exception of airman from the Nellis Dorms. On average, its an 80 mile round trip so roughly $12-15 per trip. If you're on a 6/2 schedule it could cost you $4,500 a year in gas if you're not car pooling. AIP has helped offset fuel cost for a lot of airman. It's unfortunate that there is a lack of transportation options w/ the rising fuel cost and now AIP being eliminated. In my opinion, it will hit younger airman harder then what leadership is planning for.

No...no plans for Cannon. You have everything you need there...minus HOT women sun tanning on a beautiful sandy beach, but Congress isn't going to compensate you for that. I still say Del Rio (w/ the border being closed) is worse than Cannon. Throw Altus and Minot into the mix and you have your top 5 worse bases to be stationed at.

I put this question to a visiting senior leader a couple of days ago. Takeaways:

1: He did not appreciate the question (nothing was said, but I got the point)

2: AIP is not an entitlement. It will go away when it goes away, and that's that.

3: Its looking like it will hang in there for one more year.

4: On the subject of fairness, he pointed out that troops stationed at the puzzle palace have a much longer commute than we do, yet they don't recieve AIP.

The last one is a good point, but a little apples-to-oranges as there is housing w/in 10 min of there, whereas the nearest housing development to here is 30 miles driving. You just can't live anywhere close to DC because of the cost of that proximal housing. But there are other mechanisms to address this, namely COLA and BAH. I was a little surprised to find that there is no COLA for DC. Not only do I think that's a no-brainer, but I think COLA would be a more appropriate tool to address the Creech issue. It's not the "services available on base" which are still quite negligible, it's the cost associated with the assignment and the CHOICE that the AF has made to put this mission where they did. Doing the math using the JFTR operating cost of $.51/mile works out to about $610 per month to the individual.

Edit to add useful link.

That whole program was a FW&A issue. There is what was on paper, and what was really going on. When the 3 SOS was still at Nellis, we had MX dudes that were assigned to us, and MX dudes that were assigned to Creech, but literally worked at Nellis for over a year...NEVER going up to Creech. Creech MX dudes, got the pay, Nellis guys, nope. Also, the cops that worked up there (for longer, even more boring shifts I might add) Never saw a dime of that debacle of a program either. Cause they were not "assigned" to the 432.

Ironically, I am now in the 432...but for some reason, I don't get it. So I guess it is not just as simple as being assigned to that unit, and in fact, it is a location pay.

I still am hoping for my $100k a year RPA bonus. It was never promised, but when the AFSOC A1 asked what it would take to keep me in past my commitment, I said "$100k bonus after taxes, per year, you got me till I die". He said that was unrealistic and never going to happen, and I said, "I know, that's why I plan on retiring, but you didn't ask me what is feasible, you asked what would keep me in past my commitment"

Although, I may very well stay in a little while past 20, I had no idea that simple PCS doing the exact same job could have such positive affect on my morale.

Seriously...there's a 5% COLA for Detroit, you gonna tell me Detroit is more expensive to live in than the DC area?

Although how many mil members are stationed in Detroit versus the thousands in DC they'd have to start paying? It's all about the Benjamins, baby.

2.

It sucks that the money will go away but its going to happen if not this year then next. The number I've heard is that AIP cost the AF $19 million a year. With as much as DoD needs to cut AIP is a easy kill. The busses are gone but they are doing a 15 pax van program, where if you have enough people using the van it ends up being nothing out of pocket. It's another option now that the bus is gone.

DC is unique in the sense that everything within 50 mile radius of the Pentagon is affected by the ridiculous cost of living. If you give it to DOD then you have to give if to every other agency. If you do the math, we will be in trouble.

Never been stationed in the NCR - but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night...

I thought dudes stationed in the DC/Pentagon area got money for public transport because the commute sucked so much - couple hundred bucks a month or what ever for a train/subway pass...

Fed Civilians can get $230 a month to use towards mass transit in the NCR - I'm pretty sure though military can't get it..CH can you confirm?

If it's the program I'm thinking of, then it's not really an option. The van is provided through a contract rental agency and all riders have to be on an individual contract and billed monthly. The total cost doesn't change, so if riders are deployed or TDY, everyone else has to pay more. I forget the numbers, but there is a break point where you have to pay out of pocket. Reimbursement won't cover everything. Also, all drivers have to be listed with the contractor. So if for some reason only one driver was listed and he's out of the local area, none of the other airmen are "allowed" to drive. Yes, you can list more than one driver but it's still a pain in the ass. Oh, and you have to be over 25 to rent the van. The prime target are the young Airmen in the dorms. About 0.69% are old enough to rent it and they are all on different timelines waiting for FTU. For the CMR guys, the trouble is finding enough guys on your flying schedule. Its a program created by shoes to look good on paper.

Just move all MCE to nellis.. problem solved and everyone will be happy

Is it the new unit that did it? Or are you at a better base? I can't imagine moving from Creech to Cannon would have a significantly positive effect on morale.

Cannon to Whiteman would help, though.

Sort of...Govt workers in the NCR used to get up to $230 a month towards mass transit, but they never paid you in cash, instead, they gave you metro coupons. Some fools used to try and sell them which is a big no-no. They changed the program two months ago and now each month you file a claim and they load the funds onto your metro card. It is a mess because it is only good for one mode of travel (Sometimes I take Metro, usually an express bus), but you have to sign up for one or the other. Stay late (happens a lot), and miss the bus and you are forces to take the Metro at your own expense. The metro has gotten expensive...close to $15.00 a day with parking. More than anything it is supposed to encourage the use of mass transit.

I worked for the Department of the Interior several summers in college and I remember the transit benefits were loaded on your smartrip and you could use that for either metro or bus (as long as the bus you wanted to ride took smartrip). Is it not the same for mil in particular or was I just lucky that DOI let us do that?

Either way it is expensive as balls after a while...I ended up riding my bike back and forth to work on the Capital Crescent Trail because no only was it faster but it was a hell of a lot more fun. Obviously that option isn't available to 69% of DC area workers though...

Hells yeah it did! LOVE it here.

Latest I heard was RUMINT confirming this anyone got anything more solid on it?

Plus it has always been reviewed each year. I say they just cap it at $300 a month and make it only for enlisted guys that way it reduces the cost significantly but doesn't hit the airmen with a huge cut in take home pay as a christmas present.
