US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta called the incident "inappropriate and deeply unfortunate". "These actions do not represent the views of the United States military," Mr Panetta said in a statement apologising to the Afghan people. He promised to review the results of the investigation.

If we're going to make the decision to go to war in a country (no matter who we are actually fighting) the first answer to complaints such as this should be "tough shit". We will never win a war if we're worried about offending someone.
