mxfreak54 Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Going for my FC1 in a couple weeks, medical office requested hospital records from a concussion I got in 2002, and another in 2004. Both were mild, loss of conciseness for a minute or two, hospital did the MRIs said there was no damage, rest for two weeks and I was good to go. Never have had any problems since the incidents. Anything to be worried about or just standard procedure for all head injuries? I searched for the regs online, all I found on head injuries is regs if you are already have had a flying physical. Any help is appreciated.
Karl Hungus Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 You shouldn't have ever mentioned them. Seriously. Flight "medicine" is NOT your friend.
Royal Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Be prepared to stay at Wright-Pat for at least a week for additional tests.

The other was because i had to get stitches and because they were on my head they tacked on a minor concussion even though i felt fine.  At the same hospital i had an appendectomy a couple of years later, no complications.  My recruiter told me to not mention the concussions (which I do not feel comfortable doing) and stated to not even bring the appendectomy medical documents to MEPs (I think they will request them when i get there no?) If MEPs request the records from the appendectomy im assuming they'll be able to pull all the additional docs from that hospital which show the concussions am i wrong?  I'm not confident I'll pass medical TBH feel like I'm SOL based on what i've read - rugby was not good to me in college!  Those are the only issues I have - any insight would be greatly appreciated. Well... You have to sign a release for them to get your records because of HIPPA. If you narrow the scope of that release to just appendectomy, they can't get any concussion information. If you provide the appendectomy documents yourself, you will be able to ensure that you only get docs that talk about an appendectomy... Use that information how you willÂ

I'm not an expert on the matter, but I went through my FC1 with a concussion (LOC less than 2 minutes) and made it through the process. This was circa 2005 for the FC1 and the incident happened to me while I was in high school. Worked out for me and I passed just fine with zero issues (although I have a permanent waiver on file for the LOC). Edited July 23, 2017 by Truman08
TotableMink Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 Has anyone gone through FC1 recently with a concussion in their records? I got a super mild one 11 years ago in high school with no loss of consciousness, was just wondering how much of a hassle its going to be.
CharlieHotel47 Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 The WP folks only know what you tell them. I would have kept it to my self unless they somehow got their hands on your records from 10 yrs ago... They are super helpful based on my experience there last year and will try to help to get you in and out as fast as possible. Good luck

Good luck What if you were a dependent on Tricare at the time of a concussion/treatment? I didn't lose consciousness, so it was relatively minor. I was under the impression that they can get anything if you were on Tricare at the time. Â

wikz Posted Wednesday at 09:37 PM Posted Wednesday at 09:37 PM (edited) hey y'all, I just recently got in an accident and am pretty sure I endured a concussion. I was checked out by my doctor but he couldn't give me a for sure if I did or not because he only diagnosed me based off what I told him. I was suggested to go to the ER and get scans if it got worse overtime, however, its the next day and I feel about the same and a little better. the main thing im worried about is that this is my 3rd concussion in my life and thankfully I didn't lose consciousness in any of them. the only thing im worried about is getting a scan and having that on my record for FC1. especially since I plan on applying in the next couple years, I dont want to have a recent concussion on my records or even showing that I have 3. I feel like FC1 will gobble that shit up and disqualify me. what should I do? should I skip being checked out? anything helps. Edited Wednesday at 10:14 PM by wikz

You should definitely delay/avoid a CAT scan that might find brain impacting issues in case you apply in a couple years.... 1

Concussions are no joke, especially if you've had multiple or one from a car accident. I would personally get checked out to make sure you don't have a brain bleed. I recently went through the FC-1A process with a concussion on my record in the last 3 years, no loss of consciousness, less than 40 days of symptoms per the MSD. It was a non-issue and I didn't need a waiver at all. Put your health and safety first, man. 1
