Kenny Powers Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 (edited) Holy Sh!t - how did he stop that tumble? Amazing! Edited October 14, 2012 by Kenny Powers
Napoleon_Tanerite Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Chute out at 4:18 of fall, looks like Kittinger's freefall record stands
ATIS Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 He is POPEYE... hell of a way to fly...or fall in this case. This guy doesn't a drink for the rest of his life. Good Chute.
Napoleon_Tanerite Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 And he sticks the landing. Well done
spaceman Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Totally nuts!!!!!!!!! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
moosepileit Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 BAMF! This link just worked, don't know how long it will stay up, good video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT1DhcQg0Os
flynhigh Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Prelim results indicate Mach 1.24... Have to wait and see what FAI recognizes as top speed. https://eaa.org/news/2012/2012-10-14_fearless-felix-does-it.asp
KState_Poke22 Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Its great how humble the guy is, he doesn't talk about how amazing what he's doing is. He talks about things like how he would get claustrophobic and have panic attacks in his suit or how he felt lonely when he lost comms with Kittenger in a test run. Immediately you can feel how lonely you feel," Baumgartner said. "I wanted to hear the voice because I am so used to this. Every time we have been practicing on the ground, Joe was talking to me. So I am used to the voice, and (it) makes me feel safe."
BQZip01 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) I think Felix is hypoxic. I was thinking the same thing I was wondering what the jetstream would do to him if he fell through it...though that could explain the spin. Anyone know what caused the spin? I can't wait to see the view from his helmet cam. Edited October 15, 2012 by BQZip01
Buddy Spike Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I was thinking the same thing I was wondering what the jetstream would do to him if he fell through it...though that could explain the spin. Anyone know what caused the spin? I can't wait to see the view from his helmet cam. I was thinking transonic shock 1
spaceman Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I think I read that Joe Kittinger went into a bad spin on one of his jumps that set some kind of g force related record because he spun so fast!Maybe with no air to stabilize him he could spin freely initially, and then when more air started hitting him it just made it worse before he was able to stabilize himself? I'm just guessing. Felix's spin did look pretty gnarly though! They also said he had an emergency chute that would deploy on its own if it felt too many G's, so his spin must have been considered 'safe' I guess.
flynhigh Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 Did he give the camera the "devils horns" at 1:19 in that vid?
Muscle2002 Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I was thinking transonic shock Although at that altitude, the shock would be pretty weak.
Napoleon_Tanerite Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I wonder if the capsule and/or suit will make it into the Air and Space Museum
F16Rooster Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 I was thinking possibly hypoxic as well but they seemed...unpracticed?... from the get go. At least with checklist discipline and comms.
TacAirCoug Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 (edited) It's sad when you realize an energy drink has a better space program than your nation. Edited October 15, 2012 by TacAirCoug 2
