Claybird Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 I'm from Iowa, and we may not have the market cornered on ignorant people, but I guarantee none of those morons would know the difference between that jet being at 500' or 5000'. If they had any appreciation of the important things in life, they would just be happy that any military aircraft they happen to look up and see is going to have US insignia painted on it. Only thing I ever see truly low level around here is Chinooks and Blackhawks, once in awhile probably a Peoria Herk up a bit higher. BTW, any C-17 types around here that were going cross country like this about 3 weeks ago? I had camera in the combine with long lens because we were at a farm with the only low-flying eagles that I normally get to see and my brother came on the radio asking what these 3 jets were.

Tank Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 I grew up in Western Iowa directly below a MOA and my parents house was used as a turn point on a low-level route and I remember growing up watching and listening to planes fly by. I distinctly remember a Buff flying over our house so low I could see the pilots waiving down at me or seeing F-4's and F-16's flying along the river at the bottom of the hill where my house was. Those were the days that pushed me to really wanting to fly and eventually be a military pilot. So, yes, there are many ignorant people in Iowa but most are bleed red, white and blue and love the low flyovers and airshows.
Claybird Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Must have been a really good conversation... Note to self, engage brain before talking/typing.
Gov Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 How did they get an interview with the crew chief? Too soon? 2
sky_king Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 I lived in Iowa for 22 years and I never saw anything like this. Why are the opportunities to witness awesomeness wasted on pussies?
OL Patch Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Ol Patch and maybe a few other crusty old bastards. Someone call my name....Rodan kicka some Godswiila ass Bigga time.
OL Patch Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 I thought they were all out at https://www.amarcexperience.com/amarcarticlef15eagle.asp I am officially one of those guys who says, "Son, see that tennis court on a stick...I flew that one." Merry Frickin Christmas WIFE---grab me a Ensure! 1

If I remember correctly(it's been a few years), there's an air refueling track that Altus uses over Iowa. I'm not sure where you are in Iowa, but I would guess they were going to meet up with a tanker.

Whitman Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 "Federal Aviation Administration radio transmissions indicated the pilot went by the call name Venom 01." If that's really his call sign, I wonder if the boss has a biographer? Hodor Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 (edited) Noise complaints are unpatriotic...Low flying loud jets are the reason I joined the USAF Edit: Typing good is hard. . . Edited December 9, 2012 by superpug

I'm not sure where you are in Iowa, but I would guess they were going to meet up with a tanker. There is a refueling track out in NW Iowa, and one a little bit south of me in Missouri. They were on a heading of roughly 080 basically halfway between those tracks, and I know some other people saw them still in formation a couple hundred miles east of here. Granted, that is not far in terms of jet aviation. I guess I was just curious why 3 C-17's would cross country like that, certainly makes sense if they were going to take gas from a single tanker.
DFRESH Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 The only problem with this is how many so called 'merican's will look at that and swear it's one of ours. 1
Prosuper Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 https://dougkeeney.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/b52-low-level-test2.jpg Wish it looked like this. 1

Hodor Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 I was hoping to get read in on that. I dont think it's part of the syllabus at Rucker.
PirateAF Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 It's a fuel efficiency maneuver designed to decrease drag on #2 and #3... link
Hacker Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Yep, it looked exactly like those ones. I wouldn't expect most of the people responsible for that to be able to identify the difference between a military and a civilian aircraft, much less between military aircraft of a particular country.
Hacker Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Neither of those look at all like a Flanker, Regardless of the paint job.
