How To Embed YouTube Videos

Is this you when you when you try to embed YouTube videos in your posts? If so, see below.

1) In order for the video to actually show up instead of just a link, you must use a properly formatted address inside the "media" tags. This is the right way (without the spaces, of course):

[ media ] http :// www. youtube .com/ watch?v= N5EaSFsDvEg [ /media ]

If you try to embed with any variation of the address other than the one shown above, it won't work. The key is the part in red. You have to enter the full YouTube domain name, not a shortened one like "youtu.be.com." Leave out anything that comes between the "?" and "v="

2) If the address you are trying to embed with looks similar to any of the following, simply reformat the address as shown above by deleting the parts in blue and keeping the rest. If you see a "&" anywhere in the address, that's your clue to edit:

http :// www. youtube .com /watch? feature=player_profilepage& v= dgDlV0f6lx4 (<---note where the "v=" is)

http :// www. youtube .com /watch?v= YmXvQqEcJZ8 &feature=youtu.be

3) Video ID's are composed of upper and lower case alphanumeric characters and may also have hyphens or underscores. Simply place the video ID after the "=" and you are good to go. Examples:

One addition - if you have https enabled on your browser, remove the "s" before you paste the link or it will only show as a link (vice video).

Note that in gearpig's example he used some "alternate" punctuation as to keep the forum software from interpreting and converting the text as code.

For example, in the URL he used ';' instead of ':' and in his embedding example he used the brack '{' instead of '['

As a result of some of the recent forum updates, youtube embedding is now very simple.

Copy and paste the link from the video into your post. Doesn't matter if it's https or http. Trash on the end of the link should be automatically removed by the forum software. No need to use the media button or any other button. Also, you should be able to auto-fast-forward to a specific time by copying the link from the "share" button within a youtube video (top right corner) and choosing to copy a link for a specific time in the video.

Worked fine for me. I think it's the # sign at the end of the link. Supposedly there's a whole new version of our forum software on the way, hopefully it's released soon (sts).

I noticed today that when you try to embed a youtube video with a specific time stamp, i.e. youtube's "Get video URL at current time," the easy embed feature of the new forums doesn't work.

For example, this video is just straight copy and pasted from the youtube link (i.e. right-click video, "Get video URL"):

And here, same video when I try to start at a specific time part-way through the video:

Doesn't embed. Thanks for any insight...sorry I'm not nerdy enough to bring a solution along with the problem.
