A pair of F-16 Falcon jets belonging to the D.C. Air National Guard collided in mid-air off the coast of Virginia's Eastern Shore late Thursday night, forcing one of the pilots to eject and be rescued at sea.

The collision happened off the coast of Chincoteague Island at about 11 p.m. Thursday during a routine training mission, officials say. The pilot who ejected was in the water less than hour before being rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter team.

The other plane involved in the incident was able to fly back to Joint Base Andrews in Prince George's County. Both pilots were treated for minor injuries.

Both planes belonged to the 113th Wing D.C. Air National Guard. The Coast Guard said it was alerted to the pilot's ditching by a distress signal from his ejection seat.

Glad he got out ok.

F-16 pilot was ready to give her life on Sept. 11

Late in the morning of the Tuesday that changed everything, Lt. Heather “Lucky” Penney was on a runway at Andrews Air Force Base and ready to fly. She had her hand on the throttle of an F-16 and she had her orders: Bring down United Airlines Flight 93. The day’s fourth hijacked airliner seemed to be hurtling toward Washington. Penney, one of the first two combat pilots in the air that morning, was told to stop it.

The one thing she didn’t have as she roared into the crystalline sky was live ammunition. Or missiles. Or anything at all to throw at a hostile aircraft.

Except her own plane. So that was the plan.

Glad he made it out. Hats off to the recovery team, they make it look so easy... surprised they were that quick in releasing the video.

The military is a bizarre mix of the most professional men and the laziest of shit bags. It's like a balance must be maintained so for every true red-blooded badass American, there's some worthless fucking piece of trash waste of space.

Interesting turn for this thread... In 6 posts we've mentioned sequestration, a TOAD-minded response to the 911 attacks, the worthlessness of TIBs, and the rescue efforts of a pilot involved in a mid-air.

There are probably several male tambourine players, flautists and jazz dancers stampeding, or at least sashaying rapidly, in your general direction leaving behind them only a Roadrunner style cartoon dust cloud and tell-tale trail of sequins. Be careful what you wish for, even if it is legal now.

Just wait. Godwin's law of Baseops......only 1 more post before we hear about AAD woes.

Someone should probably point out that they wouldn't have run into each other at night if they had both been properly wearing their reflective belts.
