In response to the tragic loss of Jolly 22, the HH-60 crash on 7 Jan 2014 in the UK that claimed the lives of four USAF aircrew, the River Rats, in conjunction with the Air Warrior Courage Foundation (AWCF), have established college savings 529 plans to accept tax deductible contributions for the children left behind. Anyone wishing to honor the fallen warriors, may contribute funds that will help provide 529 College Savings Plans for their children. Of the four crew members, three of them leave children behind:

Capt Sean Ruane leaves behind an infant son.

TSgt Dale Mathews leaves behind four children between 11 and 16.

SSgt Afton Ponce leaves behind two children under the age of 5.

There are two ways to give and all donations are tax deductible.

NOTE: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW CONCERNING THE "IN MEMORY..." VERBIAGE.

1) Send a check to AWCF, P.O. Box 877, Silver Springs MD. 20918. In a separate note or in the remarks sections, please write "In Memory of xxxxxxxxxxx"

AIB is out. https://www.usafe.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-140709-005.pdf

Investigators concluded that at least three geese hit the windscreen, disabling the pilot, co-pilot and the aerial gunner. All three were rendered unconscious. One goose also hit the nose of the aircraft, disabling the trim and flight path stabilization systems.

With both pilots unconscious, and stabilization systems disabled, the helicopter banked left to the point it had no vertical lift. It crashed about three seconds after being struck by the geese, investigators said.

The only requirements are the FAA, which has had bird strike requirements that have been in effect since 1996. The requirement is to withstand a 2.2lb bird at Vne or Vh, not the 6-10lb geese that impacted JOLLY 22. Also the H-60/S-70 was designed prior to the FAA requirement for bird strike protection.

In 2009 an S-76 took a bird through the windscreen which inadvertently shut down both engines (Sikorski helos have the throttles on the overhead console), killing all but one on board. The findings in that mishap also mentioned the lack of bird strike requirements

God, that was rough to read.

:beer::beer::beer::beer:

Prior to the '09 crash, a lot of S-76 operators in the Gulf had replaced the laminated-glass windscreens (heated, and powered by a dedicated AC generator) with acrylic windscreens. I forget what the exact total weight savings was from the acrylic windscreens and the removal of the AC generator, but it was a significant number - more than 50lbs IIRC.
