No transponder = disappear from commercial radar.
Right Seat Driver Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Apparently they landed fine. Malfunction forced them to power down all the electronics. No transponder = disappear from commercial radar. Where did you hear they had to power down all of the electronics?
Lord Ratner Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I heard the plane was underwater for at least 45 minutes before reappearing on radar... #thetruthisoutthere 2
Runr6730 Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Nothing to see here, just another rudder malfunction on a 55 year old jet
HU&W Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 I heard the plane was underwater for at least 45 minutes before reappearing on radar... #thetruthisoutthere Sounds about right. It takes about 10 minutes to enable, and another 10 to disable #tankerstealthmode. Add in 20-25 minutes to dispense the chemtrails...

Right Seat Driver Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Don't remember testing that at PDM, is that something you install in the field . It is as easy as throwing in the nav station.
Buddy Spike Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Did someone forget to pass their tail numbers again?
Right Seat Driver Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 Did someone forget to pass their tail numbers again? The crew forgot to ask so the bean counters put them in timeout.
JarheadBoom Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 The crew forgot to ask so the bean counters put them in timeout. It's unfortunate that there's an element of truth to this...
Right Seat Driver Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 It's unfortunate that there's an element of truth to this... Yup, nothing like landing after a sortie only to find an e-mail saying that you need to immediately fill out your tanker tracker. Took off after a 2+00 receiver delay and came back to two e-mails telling me to fill out the tracker.
pawnman Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Where did you hear they had to power down all of the electronics? JQP. Apparently that was wrong?
Right Seat Driver Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 (edited) JQP. Apparently that was wrong? Affirm. They had an issue with the rudder. There seemed to be a lot of RUMINT about an electrical issue/fire. Edited May 2, 2015 by Right Seat Driver
xaarman Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 That was an RC-135 a few days ago according to Air Force Times.
pawnman Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Affirm. They had an issue with the rudder. There seemed to be a lot of RUMINT about an electrical issue/fire. Probably because it's tough to imagine how a rudder issue would cause the transponder to fail, dropping the plane from civilian radar systems. I think that's where the electrical story comes in.
JarheadBoom Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Yup, nothing like landing after a sortie only to find an e-mail saying that you need to immediately fill out your tanker tracker. Or doing an FMS 791/AMCART exactly as directed by the very specific instructions in the G2 cut, then having the WRDCO email your Chief Boom a few days later telling him how fucked up you are. Back on topic... I was wondering how a rudder issue would cause a com/nav failure/shutdown. I guess Aviate-Navigate-Communicate worked out well for Quid, but not so much for the more-rabid British planespotters.
afthunderchief16 Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 That was an RC-135 a few days ago according to Air Force Times. Link??
xaarman Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 https://www.airforcetimes.com/story/military/2015/05/01/air-force-says-some-crew-members-treated-after-fire-on-jet/26700047/ Seems a bit more benign now after the initial report.
Day Man Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 RC-135 at Offutt, fire/smoke/fumes on the ground, some treated for smoke inhalation.
