Man, I've read so much on the U2 and SR71 design, history, and ops but shit is still crazy.  I hope to god we're innovating like we did in those earlier years.

We are, but not how or where you might think.  A very good friend of mine was heavy into the test world while on active duty.  He's now retired and teaching AI how to conduct aerial combat.  In his words, he's now doing far more to help the war fighter than he ever did before.

Bitchin' Betty's voice probably went up a few octaves on that one.

My guess is the pilot was either very new to the demo world or possibly untrained and just a wild card. It really looks like something he was just making up on the fly, which is obviously a recipe for disaster. I will say the video with him going away from the camera looks a lot more ugly than the one with the camera closest to the recovery. But he’s definitely a lucky fellow. Too bad it’s not one of those self critiquing mistakes where you scare yourself, but no one else sees it. I imagine he’s got some explaining to do.
