You can just not read the thread too. There is more to life on a Saturday than you complaining about a thread some dudes like and some may hate. It's in the squadron bar section for a reason. You did post a picture of Space X rockets landing just a page back. Yet you keep coming back to the thread. Does my posts trigger you? How about you load up on your metamucil and log out of the forum for a bit? Edited July 14, 2018 by HarleyQuinn

And greatly increased charging times when cold

Cargo long-haul co-worker tried it and got bit. He got stuck out a spare week (gone three weeks in winter) and came back to dead car. I don't know what charge level he left it at though. It would seem that they don't do so well in harsh environs, but that's 100% hearsay. I'll say this: I haven't seen an EV in our long-term parking at SDF. I'm sure they're there, I just haven't seen one. Edited November 26 by FourFans
brabus Posted November 27 Posted November 27 (edited) Are you getting it because you’re getting a new car anyways or is it because you want a more efficient commuter car while you use the “gas guzzler” when required? If it’s the latter, you should acknowledge the break even ROI is a LONG ways into the future and likely the whole idea makes zero logical sense if based on that line of thinking. Also, they are shit in cold weather…unless you’re doing short in town trips where you’re not leaving it parked for 1+ days. Not a factor if you live somewhere temperate. Edited November 27 by brabus
BashiChuni Posted November 27 Posted November 27 getting a new car anyways. commuting <75 nm to a reserve gig and wanna also use it as an airport car. live in the south. 1
Longhorn15 Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Highly recommend. I've left mine at the airport for 2 weeks in near freezing weather and had no issues. Most of the anti-Tesla stuff you see is people who've never owned one, had a terrible use case or are bad at planning ahead. The older resistive heating cars lost of energy during cold sub-zero weather, newer Tesla's all have heat pumps and aren't nearly as bad. It is maybe a 15% degradation in below-freezing temps. When the car is sitting at the airport you're going to lose 1-2mi/day in mild temps, 3-4 in below freezing and 10-12mi/day if you leave sentry mode on. If you forget or can't remember if you turned sentry mode off, you can just turn it off in the app. I would highly recommend a Tesla to anyone who can have a charger at home, dedicated off-street parking and commutes less than 150mi/day. If you live in a rented apartment or drive greater than 400mi road trips weekly, they're probably not for you. I wouldn't recommend any other EV. Even road trips are easy with superchargers. Did a 2,000 mile trip in the cold last winter, no issues. The car can go further than my kids can between stops. You'll be amazed at how few lawyer-driven nannies there are. I now despise all the bongs/chimes a Ford, GM, BMW, etc... give you and how they won't let you do things like enter GPS points when moving, even with a passenger. The tech just works every time. It is awesome. All built in America by an American company. 2 1

I have had it (Model 3 LR AWD) a few years and all I have done is put washer fluid in it, and it's still entertaining every time I put the pedal down. Also, if you care about safety, the collision warning has saved my ass more than once (mirror check with sudden stop in front). Highly recommend on the same conditions above.
ClearedHot Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Anyone have or drive the Cyber Truck? It gets a lot of hate but would be practical for me.
FourFans Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Thanks for the first person feedback fellas. I'm glad to hear Telsas are solid products! Sounds like you might have a win there Bashi. Got me looking into it now too.
mightymighty Posted November 27 Posted November 27 @ClearedHot I will highly recommend the Rivian R1T over the CyberTruck. I've had my 2022 launch edition for a year now, bought it used with 10k miles. The launch edition got some flak for quality of components, for example, the motor for the powered tonneau cover, which Rivian has since fixed with the Gen 2's (they fixed mine on my Gen 1 for free). I live in Oregon and off-road a lot for austere camping and it has been excellent on trails, uphill over large rocks, etc. I've been on road trips down to Napa and the range in conserve mode is accurate, about 300 miles, and that's partly on mountainous roads with a lot of elevation change. The storage in the car is great, and the gear tunnel is a nice touch. If you're looking for a bigger truck bed, it is smaller than the Cybertruck's. The company just received a massive $5B investment from Volkswagen and they are hitting similar production issues that Tesla faced early on in their existence, but I think the company will be an established player in the future once the Rivian R2's come out. If you have any questions feel free to DM! I'll also leave you with this: Do you really wana be the guy driving a Cybertruck? 😄 1 1
nsplayr Posted November 27 Posted November 27 (edited) I've owned three different EVs and they've all been great. A VW ID.4 that is my wife's vehicle, I owned a Tesla Model 3 RWD for about 10 months, and now own a 2023 Launch Edition quad-motor Rivian R1S. Very few issues with any of them (most serious was on the VW; covered by warranty). If you want a commuter car it's hard to beat a Model 3 IMHO. The range estimator in the Model 3 and my R1S have, for me, always been nuts-on accurate when you use the in-dash nav to go somewhere both in the winter and the summer. The R1T is a fantastic truck and if you need a truck, and I would recommend either that or the F-150 Lightning. You can get a Lightning Flash or Lariat for under $60K now with the deals many dealers are running - that's an amazing value for what you're getting. The R1T is also great and would have been my choice if I needed a truck rather than a three-row people hauler. I've driven my EVs halfway across the country, in snow & ice and in > 100 degree WX, etc. If you can A) plan ahead more than the average idiot on the street, and B) charge at home, they're fantastic vehicles. An order of magnitude cheaper to operate cost-per-mile than most ICE vehicles and a lot of fun...my R1S does 0-60 in 3.0 seconds with my entire extended family of 6 on board 😁 That same vehicle costs $0.05 per mile in fuel, and that's in a big-ass 835hp brick-shaped SUV. The Model 3 would be about half that price because it's about twice as efficient compared to the big Rivian, so $0.025 per mile in fuel...you're not gonna beat that in any ICE vehicle, let alone something in the same class of performance. Sua Sponte Posted November 27 Posted November 27 My daily driver is a 2022 Tesla Model 3 Performance. I drive 48 miles round trip to the base I work at and it costs .60 cents to charge. I love it; it's been one of the best vehicles I've ever owned. Just hit 30,000 miles on it and had no issues other than the shit paint that Tesla uses. Things that I would recommend: Don't buy Full-Self Driving (FSD). You can get it for a month for a $99 subscription for long road trips (if you want). Get a Level 2 charger installed in your garage. If you live in a colder climate (I live in Denver), make sure to precondition the car (battery and climate control turn on). The range won't be affected so much by cold weather. The insurance for EVs is absolutely ridiculous due to the cost to repair them and the fact if the battery is damaged in a crash, the vehicle is most likely to be totaled. Just like an airplane, autopilot is cool when it's engaged, but you still have to monitor it and it'll do weird shit and you'll have to take control. Sunglasses will fool the camera inside the car and you won't get as many "pay attention" alerts from the car when autopilot is on. EVs are very heavy compared to similar ICE vehicles; you'll go through tires faster. Most tire manufacturers make "EV only" versions of their tires that have stiffer sidewalls (like BQs Mom). The Tesla Supercharger network is great, however with more EVs now using Tesla's adapter as the industry standard, expect to see longer wait times. If you're buying a Tesla, get a CCS adapter so you can charge at Non-Tesla fast chargers. YouTube TV works in the YouTube app for Tesla. Sentry Mode pays for itself with the fact it's always recording from all the cameras all the time (if you have at least 20% of battery life). Model 3 Only: Get the Performance over the Long Range. Both are AWD, however, the Performance has Sport Mode which is insanely fast and the range difference between the two models is negligible. Don't listen to anyone who doesn't have an EV about how it is to own an EV. They're usually dipshit and spout off some propaganda they learned on the internet. If you miss an ICE vehicle, just get a fun one. I also own a 2024 Z51 Corvette Stingray. 4

I also own a 2024 Z51 Corvette Stingray. ^This is spot on, from another actual EV owner. I have a 2023 VW ID4 Pro AWD and live in Illinois. It is quick, quiet, and comfortable - now I hate driving my wife's ICE car. I have over 20,000 miles with ZERO cost beyond electricity. I drive about 30 miles per day commuting and trucking kids, and take regular 200-300 mile trips. My tips for everyone who asks: Only consider an EV if you will do 90%+ of charging at home. Invest in a Level 2 charger. Do not think of public fast chargers as "gas stations" - avoid them since they are still severely lacking in availability, reliability, and speed. I have used a fast charger about 6 times in 20,000+ miles. Don't get the biggest battery available. 200-300 mile range is way more than enough for most people. You don't need to carry around that giant battery and kill your tires. Longer trips require more planning but there are lots of tools like PlugShare and ABRP. Efficiency drops with higher speed and colder weather. Cold is due mostly to the power demand of the cabin heater, so use heated seats and steering wheel if you need to maximize range. I have not seen an impact from hot weather. If you live in a colder climate, the car warms in a few minutes (no engine to warm up). The most underrated cold weather feature is the electric windshield - melts snow and ice in seconds without any scraping! 2

Longhorn15 Posted November 28 Posted November 28 That is awesome. How long does it take if you have a solid 1/4” thick ice shield in the morning?About 10 mins is the most I’ve seen. Not sure it was a full 1/4”. Just turned on car defrost mode from the app and went outside to a warm and defrosted car. Defrost mode basically blasts max heat on everything.

You do have to watch out if it’s around zero degrees or colder using max defrost and possibly cracking a windshield due to the almost instant heat in cold weather. I like to run the climate control to warm up the cabin then later defrost. 1
brabus Posted Thursday at 03:44 PM Posted Thursday at 03:44 PM It will be cool when someone (probably Tesla) makes a truck that’s worth a shit for those who need a “real” truck. If Elon can catch a rocket with chopsticks, I’m sure in time he’ll do that. Of course the catch is the infrastructure in said “market areas” is woefully behind being able to support such a product. I wonder if Elon can get involved in that.

I know the vast majority of truck owners use about 10% of the capability of the truck. But, if you're one of those 10% and use it off road at all, take a look at the clearance. A cybertruck parked next to my truck the other day and I was floored at the difference. The cybertruck looked like it has 33" tires from the factory and somehow has the ground clearance of an Accord. If you don't take your truck off road, then this is irrelevant. 1
