billy pilgrim Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 Does anyone fly with an automatic (mechanical) watch? Specifically in a high-g airframe? Did the timing get thrown off? Usually I fly with a quartz watch but it’s in for servicing and looking to fly with a Bremont instead. First world problems...
jazzdude Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 Flew with my c-17 bremont in the T-6. Probably lost about 5-10 seconds a day, which was worse than before flying as a UPT IP. Good enough for upt. Quartz is going to be more accurate, and probably easier to read at night. But the Bremont is cooler than the Timex/G-shock...Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
HossHarris Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 Why destroy a fancy watch in the cockpit? go get a $20 g shock
Warrior Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 Why destroy a fancy watch in the cockpit? go get a $20 g shock I’m on my third $20 timex. You asked about mechanical, but I’m with Hoss for what to wear in the cockpit.
Switch408 Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 I fly with a Citizen Skyhawk in a high G airframe, as do many other pilots I know. Haven't noticed the timing get thrown off, but it hacks itself every night via radio signal so it's always spot on. 1

MooseClub Posted November 10, 2018 Posted November 10, 2018 High G or not, it doesn’t matter. A mechanical movement will never be as accurate as a quartz, they all slowly drift. But, you don’t buy mechanicals for their accuracy. And no, ones that update via radio signal are not mechanicals.

High G on a mechanical watch can make it worse at keeping time, since the springs and the other internals can stretch. But yeah, a mechanical watch on its best day won't keep time better than a quartz watchSent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk

LookieRookie Posted November 11, 2018 Posted November 11, 2018 On another note, what ever happened to the attempt to get the Omega Speedmaster Skywalker X-33 as a mil group buy? 2

ARAMP1 Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 (edited) I fly with my '75 Seiko 6139 automatic chronograph all the time. I figure Col Bill Pogue took his up to Skylab in the 70s, mine will do alright banging around in a T6. Edited November 16, 2018 by ARAMP1 2 2
