Seeing Flight Med/other AF docs as a TR

Recommended Posts

I am a new TR with a full-time position at SWA, using SWA health insurance soley, no Tricare.

If I need to see Flight Medicine or some other on-base doctor for something that is AF related, how does the insurance work?   For instance, I need to be seen for my annual contact lens program examination.  Since this is AF specific, do I just book with the on-base optometrist and it is treated as if I am on AD?  What about if I needed to get put on a profile for a PFT?  I'm just looking for AF specific issues, not a common cold or something where I could go anywhere.

If you are a full up part-timer, you will probably need to be on some type of status to see the flight docs. We generally need to be doing a UTA or an AFTP to go and see the docs. When I was a technician, we would no shit, have to drop mil leave to burn a 4 hr AFTP, just to go spend 6-9 minutes at the med group to get a flu shot.  I believe as long as you are on a mil status of some sort, you should be good in terms of insurance. I haven’t really experimented with it too much, and others on here may have more relevant info, but this has been my experience at my base.

Pretty much the only time I ever see the flight doc on our Guard base is for my yearly PHA.  The PHA will cover all the essentials (Dental, contact lens program, etc..) and pretty much all you'll need.  Profiles will be worked through your local Flt Doc (when there are actually any on base).  Everything else is off base with your civilian doc, unless you want to truck it to the nearest military treatment facility.  I have a waiver that requires a minor out-patient procedure every 5 years, which is all done through a civilian specialist.  If I wanted mil docs to take care of that (for free), I have to option to drive 3 hours to the nearest military treatment facility, but no thanks.

I'm a DSG that uses Tricare.
