The same security forces that put their bullets on my paper at the range.  And if your base is guarded by rent-a-cops, there'd better be a defib machine nearby because there's going to be a heart issue if they have to run anywhere.  Maybe that's why the sheriff's office got there first at P-Cola.

Same thing happened to me. I punched a hole the size of a playing card in my target but there was one hole in the top right corner. Range dude said "Too bad you would've got expert". I said look at the guy next to me. Ah OK, expert. It was an SP.

Scenario , if your illegally carrying your handgun in your daypack as you go to your workcenter . There is a mass shooter incident going on and you drop him and save many lives does leadership come down hard on you? I remember a Marine recruiting center was attacked and a Marine outside the center pulls his gun and kills the shooter, it put USMC leadership in uncomfortable spot. Is it better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6?

I think you may be talking about the shooting in Chattanooga, TN at the Navy Support Center. It was a Navy officer if I remember correctly. I believe he was eventually decorated for his actions.

LCDR Tim White wasn't charged; but as for any decoration if he indeed got one (and he should have!), I am sure the USN keep that on the down-low!

He did get a key to the city of Chattanooga, and a day named after him!

The six that fell or were injured also (eventually) received Purple Hearts.

I recently wrapped up a CC tour at the ANG unit in Chattanooga and the was told the Navy folks worked in the building for a while after the shooting. Shooter drove right past the ANG unit because he didn’t know it was there and that likely kept the victim numbers lower. Small blessings.

I’m very interested to read the AARs when the investigation is over. Reports are the Ensign that lost his life jumped a desk and engaged the shooter, and later made his way outside to assist law enforcement with location/description of shooter. I’ve heard vague reports that others might have attempted to disrupt the shooter as well. A Navy contract officer was shot and  two deputies.

My thoughts after a few drinks on Friday, a week to reflect, and living just a few minutes away. This asshole went to inflict mass damage. He encountered resistance from some absolute heroes and perhaps a building that was locked down by the time he overcame that resistance that saved lives. The simple fact the asshole engaged a soft target, and 3 people lost, 8 wounded (3 being law enforcement) I would say the assholes objectives were thwarted. (I in no way am down playing those lost/injured, but whatever happened in that building saved lives).

I really hope when everything is over everyone who deserves recognition gets it. Engaging a shooter unarmed and sacrificing your life  to save others in my opinion deserves a highest honor. The police (both military and law enforcement) that responded did their job absolutely honorably, they went in to saves and accomplished that mission.

I hope we learn some lessons and don’t let the lives lost be in vein and unrecognized

As far as I know the highest medal you can get not in combat operations is a simple Airman, Soldier, Navy Medal.

I’m curious if the Purple Hearts being awarded in TN is going to set a precedent. (As reported above, I’ve done no fact checking into that) Does it matter if a terrorists attacks you on US soil or overseas? I would say no. I know plenty of people who received much more for way less that what the Ensign and maybe others did.

Stateside or in a deployed setting?

There is a video of the Texas church shooting today where an old guy smoked the perp from the other side of the room with one shot. Doesn’t happen often but today a good guy with a gun prevented another Auckland or Sutherland Springs massacre.

Yep, been discussing it all day on a Texas firearms forum I'm on.  There's been a lot of arm chair experts criticizing the reaction time of those involved, but honestly I felt they did an excellent job given how quickly it happened.  It appears the defender made a 20-22 yard head shot.  God bless him!

Certainly the fact that a lot less than the 26 killed/20 wounded from Sutherland Springs and the state easing up on the restrictions where licensed individuals can carry proved that such tragedies can be avoided or minimized when armed, law-abiding citizens are present.

It's sad that people have to protect themselves from such threats, but the reality is failing to do so can have much more terrible consequences.

The commander’s intent for this change is that firearms will be effectively controlled and safely handled on Offutt AFB and is reflective of the full confidence in the 55th Security Forces Squadron’s ability to defend the installation and its personnel.”

Apparently, he's confident that his security forces will get to you faster than you can draw your own weapon...

After a very comprehensive review, considering a vast array of insights and experiences, the collective feedback received and the counsel of experts, the commander amended the policy with the safety and security in mind for everyone at Team Offutt. His intent for this change is that firearms will be effectively controlled and safely handled on the installation by our highly trained 55th Security Forces Squadron personnel. He greatly appreciates the feedback and understood from the beginning this change could be viewed negatively and may inconvenience some. However, he strongly believes in the policy change and feels it is in the best interest of Offutt Air Force Base.

Too bad only those who would never go postal on their co-workers and/or stage an attack on Offutt will follow his rules. This gutless “leadership” is why I left AD at the earliest opportunity.

It’s about time. Hopefully this is just the start and we’re going to actually vet these people more thoroughly.

Damn, in case you weren't sure the guys being sent home were shitbags, some added confirmation.
