My favorite story about crewdawgs taking advantage of lax customs inspections is the C-5 crew who were stashing thousands of ecstacy pills behind the jet's insulation on routine flights from Germany back home. The loadmaster had $725,000 in cash in his apartment.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, I looked up the case and they both plead guilty to 1 count each of conspiracy to import and conspiracy to possess/distribute, and they were sentenced to 17.5 years in prison. Damn boi

Here's a few from back in the day (mid to late 80s timeframe):

ANG C-5 crew makes unscheduled stop in New England to take on a few crates of lobsters handed to them from a truck at EOR.  Lobsters no big deal had the stop been scheduled, but making an impulsive lobster run on the fly (so-to-speak) is what got them in trouble.

Another ANG C-130 crew loaded a 15-pax van and followed their local NBA team around the country during the playoffs.

Unconfirmed but was told a USAFE based -130 crew was doing an unauthorized ferry of a classic 57ish Chevy from Turkey to England.  Customs and home station USAFE folks were waiting on the ramp to fry the crew upon arrival.  Someone at home squadron alerts crew via secure comms.  Chevy pushed out back of the Herk and now sleeps with the fishes at the bottom of the Med.  A classic "we know what you did but can't prove anything situation".

An F-15 from Langley was flown to Maine to pick up a load of "lahbstahs."  Lobsters are flown back to VA, cooked, and there was much rejoicing. 

Moving forward in time, the jet goes in for the big colonoscopy maintenance check, and, lo and behold, there is significant corrosion along the keel of the fuselage and the damage is fatal.  After some sleuthing, the trail leads back to the lobster run.  Turns out the lobsters were packed in frozen SEA water which melted and ran down through the jet.

Scratch one Eagle off the books.

From Pburgh back in the day we’d hop over to Navy Brunswick and pick up lobsters in the tweet. They weren’t on ice, but had their claws wrapped. You could hear them crawling around in the nose compartment all the way back to the burgh. Every once in a while a band would come off and you’d get pinched removing them from the battery/nose compartment. No fraud waste and abuse complaints since we’d “train” on the way there and back.

Did the same in 38's with a travel pod.  Lobster and ice at Westover, made it back to Laughlin nice and fresh.

We’d do the same with crawfish from Acadiana. Gotta stay a thousand or so few below the freezing level to keep them alive
