I picked up golf recently and I have a kind of mis-matched set (dad and grandfathers old clubs). I want to buy some new clubs, but not spend a ridiculous amount. I know its a little off the subject, but I wanted to get opinions of people not trying to sell to me. Any suggestions on what to stay away from, or what would be a good beginner set?

Thx

Unless you want a Costco or Sam's low budget set,

I recommend watching for local driving ranges and courses that have "demo days", hit everything, pick what you like............"expensive" doesn't mean anything if your swing is wrong. ANother less

expensive option is let someone who likes to build clubs and uses "good knockoffs" and can analyze your swing, custom fit you with a club that "performs" almost as good as the brand it imitates. Ebay also runs pretty good deal, lots to pick from.

I think that "rich", soon to retire, "pasta eating", former offensive linemen, Guard A-10 pilots have TONS of clubs for sale as they can afford what most of us only "dream" about, FWIW.

I use Titleist DCI Oversized Offset Clubs with the stiff, steel shaft (sts). I love them. I bought them in 1995 for $428 on sale, brand new. A current set of equivalent by Titleist will cost ya $896.

Once you hit the irons you want, just buy the clubs and keep them for 20 years. Don't buy the newest and greatest every two years, but, at the same time, don't buy a sh!tty set and then upgrade to death either. It'll end up costing you more in the long run.

If you go to Ebay you can get a really good deal. I bought Hogan Apex Irons that retailed at $1100 for $350. Just do your homework, on Ebay the best way to go is the wholesale companies, I wouldn't trust a private seller. The Apex's were my second set, and well worth the $350, they're wicked easy to hit and look awesome.

Just to play devil's advocate on cb03t a little bit....I've been playing golf competitively since I was 8, and 12 of the 14 clubs in my bag have come from eBay--from private sellers. I've found some incredible deals and great clubs on eBay. People can be trusted, just make sure to really look at their member ranking and the feedback that people have given. If the person was good to deal with you'll be able to tell, and if they f*cked up just a little bit it should be very apparent in their ranking and feedback. Nothing wrong with wholesalers, but don't rule out private sellers either. I honestly think some people LIVE on eBay, and to screw up on there means ruining their lives.

Some other advise, the easiest clubs to hit that I have ever owned (and then sold on eBay) have been Ping ISI. Great clubs and I don't know why they stopped making them. Because of the way they're manufactured, Ping irons are tough as hell, meaning you should probably be able to still get a nice set of them. And since they haven't been made for a few years you should also be able to get a nice deal on them.

Irons: Look on eBay for any the following PING irons: Eye2, Zing2, or ISI. I play the Eye2s which are from the mid-80s and they are awesome. I can't see myself getting a new set of irons for years. Also, try to get a sand wedge that matches the above set.

Woods: Try to find some older Callaway Great Big Bertha woods. They're from the early-90s but are solid.

Putter: Look for any PING putter. They can be found VERY cheap on eBay and are top quality.

PM me if you have any questions. As golf is my obsession I love talking about i.

Thanks for the help ya’ll; I appreciate it. I checked out ebay earlier today and they seem to have some pretty good deals. I was also thinking about going to look in a couple of the pawn shops around town. Oh real quick before I go, I want to tell a funny story. The first time I ever played golf we went to the course on Moody. While we were in the pro-shop signing in when we noticed 4 0-6s were out there playing (including the wing commander at the time). We didn’t think anything about it. Later on in the day, I go to tee off and slice to the right BAD! I look over and guess who is standing in the trajectory of my ball? You guessed it the wing commander and his buddies. So while the ball is in the air I’m trying to remember the word for you’re about to get fu*ked up get out of the way…….FORE!!! I kid you not I watched 4 0-6s jump for their lives! I was mortified……..I told my buddies fu*k the ball, ya’ll keep playing. Well I ran in to them again later on, but they were cool about it. Anyone else have stories like that? Thanks again for the help.

I have a buddy that used to be the Assistant Super at a nice golf club. We were enjoying a round of golf when we came across an enormous area covered in goose sh!t. Next to it were a dozen or so geese just chillin' watching us play.

My buddy lines up amidst the poo-poo, shanks his shot, gets pissed, and throws his 5-iron at a goose. The club hits the ground just before grazing the goose. The impact with the ground broke the club, but he swears to this day it broke on a goose's leg! Of course, supergoose just walks off pissed and unscathed.

My buddy is retarded.

When I was 11 or 12, I was playing with my dad at a really nice course in Florida. I hit the green in 3 on a par 5, and proceeded to putt the ball into a sand trip, followed by chipping it into another ditch, and then back into the same trap. I was soo pissed that I threw my club, which proceeded to break upon hitting the cart and land in the tee box of an adjacent hole. Luckily the guys teeing off were not hit, and I never saw any of them in the clubhouse.

My best golf story...

While I was in UPT a few of buds who were IPs at Luke brought a four ship of Vipers down for a visit at Laughlin. One of the dudes managed to get his clubs in his travel pod. I guess he wanted to impress all of the UPT studs because he proceeded to come screaming up initial and when he went into a very hard break turn, his travel pod (and golf clubs), went flying off into the desert...it gets better.

They left Launghlin with plans of making a few more stops on the west coast. One of the other dudes in the four ship had to take a leak so he unbuckled his lapbelt to get a little more leverage. That leverage resulted in the lapbelt bumping against the sidestick controller.

End result he ejected and lost the aircraft trying to take a piss.

When I play with my son (a SR college football WR@6'3'220lbs) who recently took up golf and loves it. Suffers from "Happy Gilmoritis", ie it doesn't matter how straight the ball goes, only how far. When we are on the tee box I tell him to wait a second, I have a walkie-talkie, drive down the right side 275-300 yds, walk into the woods

and stand there waiting for his ball to land near me or listen for the "artillery shell" like noise

as his ball breaks off tree branches. I tell him to "go ahead" over the WT, sure enough I am within 10 feet, everytime. If I still can't find his ball I put on his "Golf Vision Glasses", these intense blue glasses from Sharper Image and the ball shows up in the rough around me!

I was 18 on par 3 140 yard hole with water. Well I suck but on this day the Golf Gods were with me. I ended up hitting a six iron (because I suck) and bam a hole in one. This was in front of my buddy and about ten maintence dudes working on a shack. Of course I am like hell ya I rock and the maintence dudes are asking if I need someone to verify my hole in one. Then I am like...ahhh no that's ok. I snuck on the course and thus did not need to have anyone verify I was there. The Golf Gods were laughing there a$$ off!
