did a search and couldn't find much, but Ive had a question ponder in my mind for a couple days.

if guard pilots stay in their allotted unit for their whole career (assuming they don't transfer to another one), are they allowed to pursue an IP assignment? has anyone ever done so?

There are reserve IP squadrons at all UPT bases. So I assume a Guard pilot could do that. Although I think they strongly prefer pilots who had previous instructor time.

We have guard guys all over the place, still with their home unit, but doing X: IPs at FTU, staff in DC/Europe, going to school, working in Science and Tech land, operational test, etc. There are quite a lot of opportunities for dudes to branch out if they want to take a break from the “standard grind” at their home unit.

@brabus I assume you’re in a ANG fighter SQ? How would that IP assignment work for you guys?

I’m a MAF guy, have been looking at flying the T6 to compliment my airline gig but I assumed it required a transfer to the reserves.

@Props The couple ways I’ve seen it work is through VLPAD and switching to another state’s ANG that has individual billets posted at FTU units. I’m not sure if any state ANG has UPT billets, but precedent is set for AETC/ANG relationship. You could always reach out to MS/OK/TX JFHQs (or squadron bros in those states) to see if any UPT billets exist.

Interesting, I didn’t know it worked like that. Thanks for the info man

if you're a guard pilot, and reach lt col or higher, are you assigned staff jobs in DC, etc. like AD or are you allowed to just stay at your unit and continue flying.

if memory serves correctly, in the guard, pilots fly the same amount no matter what rank meaning they don't have to deal with any non-flying assignments?

Guard members are not assigned staff tours in DC, or anywhere else besides your unit or state. There are plenty of people who volunteer for staff tours elsewhere, if one is interested.  O-6 and up becomes quite competitive and might require you to take a non-flying job somewhere to achieve the rank, but if you just want to fly, plan on retiring as an O-5. And the absolute best part of the ANG, is being a DSG pilot you won’t even have any other squadron job other than pilot. Go fly at your airline, and go fly at your unit. Best of both worlds just being a pilot!
