It’s called IPT and is part of FUPT which is the AETC/a5/8s brain child. It’s the whole plan of t-7s for everyone

col or general leard

Are they really trying to have everyone go T-7s? So it’s back to how it used to be then. Are they going to take T-6/T-1 IPs and eventually train them on the T-7 as well?

The whole everyone flying T-7s is a long way out.

T-1 IPs will not fly T-7s because it makes absolutely no sense and no one will be in a T-1 billet by the time it’s opened to non-T-38 trained pilots.

Not to mention it’s a type 1 high G aircraft so it needs a full up fuge profile and people are going to be going night night.

Other than AFOTEC folks: the 19 AF IOT&E initial cadre are all fighter bubbas because that’s what’s needed.

Edit 2: And yes there will eventually be some T-1 trained pilots in the 99th and other places. But that will be rarity. It will be for shiny pennies or test cases

Mostly gee-whiz/thread derail, but:

Any reason why the T-7 is subsonic?  Is there still DT/OT wickets to clear?

It will be tested above 1.0 but the USAF didn’t pay for it to be certified so the placard limit will be below it.

it was a desired not required part of the contract.

If we pay Boeing they will magic wand make it supersonic.

2.5 is dead. Follow on syllabus is significantly better. However, T-1s, both the jet and sim program are completely going away. T-6 studs will all come with a multi/instrument rating from a handful of contracted civilian schools around the country. If they don’t get 38s they will being going straight to the FTU after T-6s.

You will be home pretty much every night, some days by 1500, some not until 2300. Flying (T-6) will depend on your job and desires. I showed up knowing it was my last assignment, and requested to not get some bs job and just fly as much as I can. I double turn most days, and occasionally triple, but I’ve never been forced to fly a 3rd, if I do it it’s on a voluntary basis. Other folks fly more like once a day, or every other day. If you love flying and teaching, you will love the job. For me personally, it’s super rewarding watching these kids go from not being able to strap into the plane, to doing off station formation departures in busy class B airspace, 6-9 ft from another airplane.

T-6 fleet is facing some mx issues, should be sorted out soonish, but I hear PIT is taking awhile to get though now a days, up to several months past projected grad dates.

Are you an IP at Columbus? Heard the MX issues are ridiculously there now. Also studs from the last few legacy T-6 classes are getting screwed over because the IPT class is the priority for the flight line. People have been waiting for months for the flight line after finishing academics.

More likely is that they contract out UPT to some civ school and only use T-7s for fighter track.  No T-6. No T-1, just Cessna direct C-17 etc.

...yeah, it's dumb.

As of now, and they’ve started it at CBM, you do IPT, an abbreviated T-6 syllabus, then track heavies or go 38s. I expect that eventually the T-6 for heavy drivers will go away.

Completely hate it.  Asked for a 365 or AFPAK hands to not come here, wish they had given it to me.

We have several people who fought over 6 month non flying deployments to leave.

You will be here for 42 months not including PIT which may be an additional 7 months.

The assignment is slightly more tolerable for people with families, but I’ve seen most of our FGO decide to clean break after their first year here.

Dealing with 19th AF is just as bad as dealing with TACC but that depends your position.

Go FTU instead if you can.

What makes it so bad people are willing to take absolute horrendously shit deals to get away?

Not great across the fleet, some bases better than others, seems to come and go in waves. Supposedly the contract has/is changing hands and rates will improve in the coming months. A single class of the IPT studs got bumped in as they finished IPT and the bobs wanted them to start the SGTO syllabus so changes and feedback could be routed up.

I'm constantly floored how we ran UPT the same way for decades with the only real change being adding the T-1 and "S"UPT. Now I can't keep up with the constantly changing ideas, syllabi, acronyms, and other nonsense. I thought UPT was going to be VR goggles in Austin??!? Probably could have gotten airline guys to staff that one long term.

Too many students were taking the VR headsets home to “chairfly” and returning with sticky controllers.

Aren't the MX issues mainly due to a lack of parts needed? Not sure how changing the contractors will be fix the problem. Apparently the T-6 flight line is so delayed that they are now begging AD studs who have finished T-6 academics/sims to go XPW. What a wild time to be in Columbus. And now Not sure why they can't just move the guard and reserve heavies over to XPW.

19th AF must be high af when they picked CBM to do IPT try out. From what I gathered, T-6 flight line was already pretty backed up in the summer of 2024. And now a ton of students in the legacy T-6 classes are suffering from the long wait because of the IPT class and MX issues.

Depends the person and timing.
Within UPT people try to deploy because some are single.  Some are angry over the work they are doing.  Some anticipate going back to Ops and trying to avoid getting hit with a 6 month deployment. Some see it as a vacation from the long days.

Some of own reasons were; I hated how UPT is process and optics focused, the culture in AETC creates power hungry people who just aren’t ready for power yet, I hated watching students get screwed over because of 19th Air Force policies, the town sucks, and there is such a large disconnect between anything operational that I don’t feel like I’m in the military at all.
