South Korea declares Martial Law

This is probably going to be a significant event, so I'm making a separate thread.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol just declared Martial Law for the entire country. He said there are North Korean Sympathizers in the Parliament and they are attempting to Sabotage the Government with "Anti-State Activities".  The President said he is going to “Eradicate Pro-North Korean Forces and protect the Constitutional Democratic Order.”

 

In other words, the political party in power is accusing the opposing party of colluding with a foreign adversary, and is using it a pretext to "pause" democracy.

 

 

Tanks are in the streets, military forces have blockaded and entered the Parliament building.

 

This is probably going to have an impact on our relationship with SK, and our troops who are based there. Why is one of our closest allies in the region moving away from Democracy and toward totalitarianism? Ukraine did this, now SK. This is pure speculation and a "hot take" based on limited information, but there is a non-zero chance the people of SK may find themselves in yet another proxy war and we shouldn't be surprised to find ourselves paying for massive support to the SK government as they fight our "mutual enemy".

A lot of power-hungry people hiding behind slogans like “saving democracy” these days, followed by deny deny counter-accuse your political adversaries. Seems like the SK people may also have to take out the trash, at least based on the little bit of info I’ve read.

Props to the opposition Parliament members.  Ignored the threat of martial law, climbed fences, stared down guys with guns, and held a unanimous vote to end the martial law.  Technically has to be signed off by the President, but clearly he's done.

I've seen all kinds of videos circulating that show the 'special forces' being employed weren't even carrying ammo.  There are loads of videos/pictures showing empty guns and lots of simunition bolts/blue taped magazines.  The blue tape could mean anything but it's very strange.  Maybe less lethal option.  Who knows.
