Starting a podcast before being selected for a military pilot slot: Good or Terrible idea?

Hello everyone,

I have considered starting a podcast related to aviation, however I am coming to this forum for advice as to whether or not it would be a good idea before even securing any sort of military pilot slot. I would aim for my podcast to be somewhat informational and entertaining, but I don't want it to come across or be perceived that I am doing the podcast to show my ownself, rather the aviation professionals I would be interviewing. The absolute last thing I want to do is create a podcast, broadcast my face and make it to where, even if get past the commissioning phase, that I am viewed as some know-it-all asshole, even if I do my best to not portray being as such. I like the "Make them tell you no" mantra and the last thing I want to do is literally make them tell me know.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

If you have to ask, then you must think you’re at least a little bit of a “some know-it-all asshole”, I would go with a nah, timings not right. But hey, you do you! 🍺

It's generally best not to do public speaking on things you don't know much about...hasn't stopped a lot of people....

Thank you both! I wanted to come on here for this exact reason, candid and honest responses. I will heed this advice and not start a podcast.

Thanks for the quick responses,

Here's one of my favorite social media sites about flying...

Pilot Debrief - YouTube

Sure, it's not a podcast (I didn't realize anyone outside of commuters listened to those anymore, but I am outside the targeted demographic so what do I know?); but it's a good standard to measure yourself by (STS).

If you're not as articulate and comprehensive as Hoover, I'd give making podcasts a miss and focus on more important things...

You underestimate how many people don’t give a shit what you have to think and say…

I think it’s a great idea!

in fact I’d document every UPT training sortie. Maybe you can discuss things your IPs should have done better. Make sure to tag the UPT base in the hashtags

If you make it through and get your wings, I’d say there’s a better than average chance you get a callsign as a result. Probably not a good one. 😂

Free advice. There’s almost zero upside to putting your personal shit out for public consumption. A picture, opinion, video, look what I did, listen to what I know, etc. the cons far outweigh the pros. Think about applying for a future airline job or maybe a Guard unit and having them read a questionable Facebook post or play your podcast and then ask for an explanation.  Your older, wiser self will thank you if you just STFU and live your life. You’ll mess up enough in private or within your normal circle. No need to expand the list of people who you might have to explain extra shit to sometime in the future.
