Changing/Switching airframes

Oh man, prepared to get hammed on this thread. I will leave it to the more creative and funny guys to berate you, but I will give you some advice: If you want to fly Pavehawks, then you need to rush the Guard/Reserve units that actually fly them. Off the top of my cranium, look at Long Island, Patrick, Kirtland, Alaska, and Moffett.

Just to make myself clear because apparently it needs some explaining.

I am looking at the Air Force. As far as for my chances of getting to pick rotorcraft, I know they are slim out of start. I know what I need to do pretty much for joining and the path past UPT. My question was regarding already being in, being active and gone through an initial airframe training. Was wondering how it works to transfer between airframes and if it is possible to transfer into a rotorcraft from fixed wing.

Yeah I have been talking with the reserves out of Patrick and DM, but really hard to stay in contact as they don't seem to want to return phone calls or emails easily.

Well since I was not in the corp at A&M and am on the road all the time for work and do most of my spare time searching via phone kinda makes it hard to search around. Especially when your working 80hrs a week between three jobs. Just wondering what happen to respect for others now as well.

Dude I will be nice, but just for one post.

First, stop whining about traveling a lot and working long hours. You're not going to earn any sympathy here. I'm sure your travels don't routinely bring you to JATWISH.

Second, don't plan on swapping airframes. You will need to get helos out of UPT. Airframe swaps are very rare and typically happen as a result of taking command of a mixed group/wing or going to a special school like TPS. Even then - way down the road and rare.

Third, guard/res units will not cater to you. There are far more people interested than there are openings. You need to apply, show up and hang out with them and get an in. They have the luxury of choosing members from a lot of qualified applicants. You are the one doing the legwork.

Drop the attitude and requests for respect. That kind of thin skin will not go far in the flying world.

Whatever the case may be.....if you really want the rotary wing mission you'll get it. Suggest you watch inside combat rescue. Stop referencing your personal history. Good luck.

Dude...I almost posted to this thread earlier to re-iterate what great advice Tonka had in his reply. Then I thought to myself "self, surely this kid gets it and can comprehend what has been spelt out." Then you drop the "I'm on a cell for intranet and work for/go to school for a living BS" and I want to punch you in the dick. I have a shred of sympathy since I too am an Aggie (non Corp as well) but I realize that this school may be getting too big for it's britches. When I left in 2003 it was 43,000 string and I assume it is now even bigger. I truly thought that you would be whining about the "boot" comment and truly wish that was it. You now seem, to me, a sensitive new aged prick. Notice how I didn't even give you the pilot respect that your signature block commands. ###### you, and go away. Work for it, earn it, and listen to what others tell you. If you had gotten over yourself for an instant you wouldn't have forced me to come out of my alcohol induced coma to write this. ###### I'm pissed. Honestly, Tonka's response was all that this thread needed. Thats it. He provided you with an answer, as well as an avenue to search out other facts and you decided to be a whiny bitch about it. Don't come into our house and demand respect, I don't care who you are.

Howdy, been looking about signing up for a long time. I've talked to reserve units and such but haven't taken the plung yet. I've been looking at active as well and had a few questions.

First and probably most pressing to me is I really would like to get a pavehawk slot, although I know they are few and far between and the chances of it even being on the list after UPT is slim to none. If I couldn't get that what are the chances of transferring airframes in and which would be the best route for that major or a switch (fixed -> rotorcraft).

What's the procedure and how long does it take to even have the chance to transfer airframes anyway?

Thanks,

Back when I was trying to get an F-16 slot, I used to watch Top Gun every time I was flying my airline across the country. It worked, and I got a pretty sweet assignment. A buddy of mine was really into helicopters, but he got stuck driving the bread truck. Still, he made a habit of watching Air Wolf every night before changing into his PJs and dreaming of flying. He heard about how watching Top Gun helped me become a fighter pilot, so he figured the same thing would help him become a badass helo pilot.

It didn't work. Good luck!
