Side stick

A tangent, but a good story: Boeing offered to put a sidestick on the 777. Since United was the launch customer, they had the choice. Since the UAL folks involved with the consultations were older pilots that grew up with a yoke, that's what the 777 got stuck with. What a shame.

All the Embraer Junga Jets have those too, I think it's called the "motorcycle yoke" or something like that. Think BAe had it on some of their products too.

btw Boeing wins the award for dorkiest name for an airplane...the 747-400 LCF has been dubbed the "Dreamlifter"

It sounds like everybody is against yokes.

Why?

Just not cool any more, or is it something actually better about a side stick?

Dream lifter - ugly airplane gets an ugly name.

The image is the conceptual flight deck. Apparently, cockpit is not PC per the Seattle types. Could be different, but I doubt it. It'd be too much Airbus like.

Never heard of motorcycle yoke (although it fits). I know that Hawker has the same funky set-up in their aircraft and refers to them as "rams horns".

Speaking of funny yokes/sticks...what's up with WW II british fighters (Spitfire, Hurricane) and that funky circular handle for a stick. I don't see that being very ergonomic.

Yeah, the nose wheel in the 130 is controled by a funky cirular wheel contraption. Nice until you have to turn it more than your wrist allows. Then you move, lose center, can get interesting until you get some techniques (LIGHT) to center it again.

The only thing I ever flew with a stick was the Tweet, but to this day I still like that better. I can't speak for the side stick, since I've never used one, but yoke...moke...

Talk to me about ergonomic whem all the ADIs in my planes are sitting in front of me...GOSH!

I'd think side sticks would make sliding into and out of the seats dramatically easier - no gymnastics involved. Also I believe Airbus has a full QWERTY keyboard on the A380, that slides out from the top of the footwell, and pops in right where a yoke would normally be.

That way you can do the Electronic Flight Bag/Mission Computer thing with a REAL keyboard instead of a hunt-and-peck keypad, surf the internets for porn, and do some word processing through the flight.

Does that thing get SportCenter? I've been trying to get that on the color MFD in the T-38C, but I've yet to figure it out. I figure that maybe it would be nice to update my fantasy football team while Stanley is doing loops or flying localizers...

...yeah, that WOULD be a good use of the avionics.

It does get XM WX/Radio... Kinda nice for those flights across the wide open nothing. (plus I suppose it [XM WX] is a nice little "safety" feature)
