Spartacus Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Are there any models of C-17's that have the stick located on the side instead of the center? I have heard that they are mounted on the side from several people but all of the photos that I can find show that it is in the center.
FlyAF Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Not to my knowledge, no. As far as I know, only Airbus puts side sticks in their flight decks - except for the A300 and A310. Here's a picture of the A330 cockpit. [ 14. January 2007, 21:09: Message edited by: FlyAF ]
Chuck17 Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 No. Your sources dont know what they are talking about. Chuck
Guest C-21 Pilot Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Chuck, Com'on man. He's thinking of the tiller.
HuggyU2 Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 A tangent, but a good story: Boeing offered to put a sidestick on the 777. Since United was the launch customer, they had the choice. Since the UAL folks involved with the consultations were older pilots that grew up with a yoke, that's what the 777 got stuck with. What a shame.

Guest cbire880 Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Looks like the 787 is still going to have a yoke as well.

egochecks Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 ^^^^^^^^^ Where does Lt Uhura sit? Is that for real, ie is that a prototype idea or the actual cockpit? Edited for clarity. [ 15. January 2007, 16:40: Message edited by: egochecks ]
HerkDerka Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 The Concorde still takes the award for weirdest flight control column. HD
brabus Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Bellancas are like that too...I would think it would be weird as hell, but my buddy who has one says it actually feels great and he prefers it to the standard yoke. Maybe just different strokes for different folks.
Clayton Bigsby Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 All the Embraer Junga Jets have those too, I think it's called the "motorcycle yoke" or something like that. Think BAe had it on some of their products too. btw Boeing wins the award for dorkiest name for an airplane...the 747-400 LCF has been dubbed the "Dreamlifter" gay!
Guest picaresquepilot Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 It sounds like everybody is against yokes. Why? Just not cool any more, or is it something actually better about a side stick? Dream lifter - ugly airplane gets an ugly name.

Edited for clarity. The image is the conceptual flight deck. Apparently, cockpit is not PC per the Seattle types. Could be different, but I doubt it. It'd be too much Airbus like.
sky_king Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Stupid question for you all. Do those B787 chairs slide back enough to walk in front of them and sit normally or does one have to climb over the center console?
LockheedFix Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 No, there is a teleportation laser under the left wing that "beams" you into the seat.
Guest FCI Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Originally posted by Jumper Bones: All the Embraer Junga Jets have those too, I think it's called the "motorcycle yoke" or something like that. Speaking of funny yokes/sticks...what's up with WW II british fighters (Spitfire, Hurricane) and that funky circular handle for a stick. I don't see that being very ergonomic.
Guest KoolKat Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Yeah, the nose wheel in the 130 is controled by a funky cirular wheel contraption. Nice until you have to turn it more than your wrist allows. Then you move, lose center, can get interesting until you get some techniques (LIGHT) to center it again. The only thing I ever flew with a stick was the Tweet, but to this day I still like that better. I can't speak for the side stick, since I've never used one, but yoke...moke... Talk to me about ergonomic whem all the ADIs in my planes are sitting in front of me...GOSH! BENDY
Clayton Bigsby Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 I'd think side sticks would make sliding into and out of the seats dramatically easier - no gymnastics involved. Also I believe Airbus has a full QWERTY keyboard on the A380, that slides out from the top of the footwell, and pops in right where a yoke would normally be. That way you can do the Electronic Flight Bag/Mission Computer thing with a REAL keyboard instead of a hunt-and-peck keypad, surf the internets for porn, and do some word processing through the flight.
flynhigh Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Cirrus SR20/22 have a side stick. Way nicer compared to a standard yoke. It feels more natural. And yes, it does make it easier to get in/out of the cockpit, IMHO.
Champ Kind Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 That's a sick looking instrument panel for a small GA plane.

I figure that maybe it would be nice to update my fantasy football team while Stanley is doing loops or flying localizers... ...yeah, that WOULD be a good use of the avionics.

It does get XM WX/Radio... Kinda nice for those flights across the wide open nothing. (plus I suppose it [XM WX] is a nice little "safety" feature)
