otsap Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 I just recieved a pilot slot through OTS. I turned 26 in march and figure I won't go to OTS till about that time next year, meaning I'll graduate UPT at 28. So am I going to feel like old man river in my class? Are most students right out of college and about 23 or so?
Guest dbuxton Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 I'll be 28 when I start UPT in a couple months, so join the club.
Guest sickels101 Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 I'm the youngest in my class at 23. We have a few guys who just hit 30 and a few who are rapidly approaching. If you want to fly don't worry about your age.
Guest Guppyguy Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 I'm graduating from UPT next friday and I turned 31 today. Yes, I will need a wheelchair to make it across the stage to get my wings. Guppyguy Old dog/new trick
Guest AKGuardPilot Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 No worries, I turned 28 when I got my slot... and turned 29 last February. I will start UPT a couple of months in front of my 30th birthday. Maybe by then I can use a miracle ear.
Guest IAGuardWife Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 My husband's class had 6 people turn 30 while at UPT.

Maybe we can get a bulk deal on the miracle ears. Oh yeah, turned 30 at UPT. It's no big deal, unless you try to talk to the kids about things like "The Brady Bunch" (they had no idea what that was) or seeing two of the first three Star Wars movies in the theaters. [ 16. Champ Kind Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 We have a guy from the Hawaii Guard in my class that just turned 33. He says that while we are all filling out Tricare forms, he's filling out stuff for Medicare! Everytime we go for a run we always have to make sure the poor guy doesn't break his hip!
Scooter14 Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 Hey now... I'll have you know that when we ran the PT test at UPT, three of the top 5 were 30 or older. 6th-lastplace were reserved for the Twinkie eating Playstation playing 2002-2003 commissionees.
Guest Remy1492 Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 The best guys in my class were Guard/Reserve enlisted, nav or engineer people who were all almost or over 30.
HookEmAll Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 I'm a 25 year old faip half done with my tour, and I'm still younger than well over half of my new class. Only three people in my last class were younger than me. Maybe my flight just get all the OTS guys or something...
Guest jmac2222 Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 I will be old when I get there (27). I will also be a Capt so I'm not only old, but behind the power curve as well.
JS Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 I just did the math and the average age of my UPT class was around 25. We had plenty of 23-24 year-olds, but also a few 29 & 30 year olds to bring the average up.
zrooster99 Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 I'll turn 29 a month after starting...join the club...
Guest jchrampanis Posted May 18, 2005 Posted May 18, 2005 I just turned 30 and was thrown in the solo tank yesterday. Average age for my class is about 25-26.
FalconXtreme Posted May 18, 2005 Posted May 18, 2005 no offense but whats up with all the older aged folks in upt? where are all the 20-22yr old guys from rotc and the acad?
Guest TheBobGoat Posted May 18, 2005 Posted May 18, 2005 there are some stats (airforce stats) around somewhere that show the avg age is like 26 about as young as you can be is 22 jumangio, we were in your plane the other day, new car smell
Guest Lightninbo Posted May 18, 2005 Posted May 18, 2005 hey akguard pilot... your name doesn't happen to be scott?

I'm 31 and my last PFA run was 9:42...oh, and didn't break my hip! no offense but whats up with all the older aged folks in upt? where are all the 20-22yr old guys from rotc and the acad? The older guys have all the experience and maturity. That does wonders during an interview. Also, Guard guys are often pulled from within the unit and the cutoff age is a major factor. The Guard usually takes care of their loyal. -------------- Wxpunk

Guest copenhagen Posted May 18, 2005 Posted May 18, 2005 31 and just hit the flightline here. Been skiing my whole life and knees are shot - this running stuff for PFT sucks... And Phlash - is he really 33? [ 18. May 2005, 18:58: Message edited by: copenhagen ]
Champ Kind Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 Hey hey! I was just joking around with the "Medicare" and "broken hip" comments! Actually, he jokes around about it more than we do. It's funny though, because he really looks like he's in his early twenties. And yes, he really just turned 33. He was a TSgt before he commissioned, and I think he was coming up for E-7. There are actually two guys in my class that have clusters on their Nat'l Defense Ribbon because they were in Gulf War I.... you should have seen the looks on their faces when a couple of us reminded them we were in 4th grade around that time!
Guest pucho4pr Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Ha..... very interesting subject! In fact, I'm one of those. Yep, more than 30 (won't give you the exact age cause everyone will know who I am.) Yes, I have a Star on my Nat'l Defense Ribbon, a few Air Medals, a couple Aerial Achievement Medals and a few others but didn't participate in Gulf War 1. I've been on AD for 10 years already and 10 more for the UPT commitment will give me a retirement check. I must admit that UPT is a challenge, especially if you are a sane individual. I don't think age matters; what matters is your determination to succeed while serving your country. Let's not forget the reasons why we are here. [ 30. Guest Herc165 Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 I was just selected for UPT last year at 25 and will be going to UPT at no less then 26 years of age. I don't feel old at all. Getting selected to UPT is like being born again.
