Outside of the strip, Vegas is a major heap. If you are into rock climbing and have experience, check out Red Rocks (about 30 minutes away from the strip), and then Mt. Charleston (1.5 hours outside strip). I believe Mt. Potosi has been closed to climbers, but if it isn't, check that place out. Really steep wailing caves with killer limestone.

They are both sport climbing areas, so you'll be safe with a 60 meter, full set of draws, and a gri gri. If you are looking at some bouldering, check out Mecca (google this one), and also the Craft boulders which is right outside Red Rocks.

If you are only interested in the strip, it's all the same. Gambling, alcohol, and trouble. If you want to see a good show, I hear Elton John is good. Theirs also Cirque du Soleil which I've always wanted to see in person.

Stay out of anything with Trump's name on it...or at least don't gamble there.

Cheers! M2

If you end up making your way down to the old strip in "Old Vegas" check out a bar called "Hogs and Heifers."

If you're a fan of hole in the wall type juke box joints with hot women serving beer and taking their shirts off... Well... you'll want to try it.

I want to say the night I went; they had $4 24 oz beers.

start at Sapphires...you can knock most of them out there...

I'll second Sapphires. Cheap (relatively) drinks and free for military. Not full nude (because they serve alcohol), but still quite nice.

Staying at Nellis for two weeks on an Ops AF PDT and I was wondering if anyone had advice on what to do while here. We hung out with the Red Horse guys for the first day; they were really cool and lots of info was digested by all. For anyone at Nellis, we're the obnoxious ROTC cadets walking around, feel free to glare.

Also, didn't know whether this belonged in the ROTC thread or not?

With your name, I would head on down to the 9 Fine Irishmen in NY/NY. Also, I sugggest getting a 32oz 190 Octane w/ Extra shot, then go ride the rides on the Stratosphere. Hoffbrau House over by the Hard Rock, and Red Rock Park for some hiking, and Red Rock Resort for Cougar Hunting. There are a million things to do in that town...I kinda miss living there.

And if you want to know what not to do: it's not usually a good idea to ask the Pit Boss at MGM if he can open up a table of 4 5 what, then promptly puke.

Good stuff dudes, any advice/ideas for who to visit on base? We're stuck on base during the week. Thunderbirds, petting zoo, and Creech are already lined up but we're looking for ideas.

Stuck on base? Golf course, o-club, class-6, 25 club (closed last time I was there but heard it's back open), blueberry hill to sober up at dawn... That should just about do it.

For 'out of the way' career fields that do cool shit, stop by the 6th CTS and see if you can't get a TACP to show you their gear (sts). They'll be happy to chaff the queep and get out of the office for as long as you want. Rescue squadron is always cool to see. Maybe see about getting to the bomb dump to watch them build up lives.

But if you want a real taste of active duty and you have time, go wait in line at MPF for 3 hours. Then when they close at 1400 for 'training', leave with nothing.

Capt David Wisniewski's memorial service is tomorrow at 0800, over at the 66 RQS, if you care to attend.

Unfortunately we're leaving for Creech at 7:30, otherwise I would be honored to attend that.

"Stuck" was bad wording. Having the time of my short life on base.

Nellis' MPS switched to 2 offsetting shifts earlier this year so there are ppl working there from 6 - 6 though I'm not sure what they actually advertise as customer svc hours. You can wait 1.5 hours in line for a new CAC along with retirees and contractors but that section is run by civilians. Finance is the new MPF, that's where you get the true active duty experience.

Good luck finding a seat when eating lunch at Creech--I'd ask your tour guides to avoid eating at 1130-1230 which I guarantee is when they'll try to push you through the DFAC. They've got a GCTS training class this week which means even more ppl to cram through the DFAC and lines out the door.

Speaking of GCTS, if you want to see something unique, ask to tour the GCTS training site (Creech) during your Security Forces tour; with the class starting this week, it'll be good timing to see their act.

+1

Reschedule Creech, go to the memorial.

Trust me, I would have much preferred to pay my respects at the memorial, but the guys at Creech went out of their way to have us today so I doubt that would have went over well. Apparently the PDT group before ours got viper rides, in front of all the other people in line here at Nellis.

Bullsh*t. I'm one of the guys at Creech. There are priorities. I'll hint at our priorities next time I see the fellas.

That's ######ed up right there.

I have no control over where we go, we can only suggest things to our escort officer on the days that are free. That was not a free day, end of story.

And yeah, that is f*cked up. Don't get me wrong, I would be tempted to take the ride, but there's no way I would. I didn't do anything to earn an incentive ride over the people who did.

Good chance I will be moving to the Nellis area at the end of the summer. I am young(24) and have no family/pets that will be with me. Looking for advice mostly on where to live. I don't plan on buying, so rent for now. Wouldn't mind living with some younger pilots/navs either.

Thanks.

Don't live right around Nellis unless you have your conceal carry. It's possible to live on/close to the Strip but you will have a long commute. Summerlin is a really nice area but on the other side of Vegas. Your best bet would be the Aliante master plan community in North Las Vegas, 15-20 minutes to Nellis, new development, and lots of Nellis/Creech pilots live there. PM me if you have any other questions about the area.

Thanks for the reply. If you or anyone else could mention some specific apartment complexes that would be really awesome, kind of difficult to sift through them online.
