I think that I remember hearing that the speed for the overhead break is around 350 knots, but do fighter guys ever go above this speed "for fun?" On airwarriors, they talk about how they usually do a minimum of 500 knots, but maybe that's because they're at the boat. Just curious...

The T-38 is at 300KIAS....I can't imagine it being too much faster in the fighters, but maybe it is...

The T-37 (and I'd imagine the T-6 also) is 200KIAS at home base...... then usually a little faster than that at out bases.

200 KIAS in the Herk. You gotta be careful when you're wrangling that kind of speed!

We fly at 300 in the Viper. I've had buddies tell me about flying up initial at 400+ in Korea.

The answer is, put the power in the NW corner,

see what you get...........not enough, pull the

gear up and go-around (safety, low speed)breakout

5K above the pattern and do a 45 to initial descending (fans like slicebacks) re-entry............speed should be good. Try all the speeds, see what works for you at somebody

else's field, if there is a question, you sped up to make sure there was enough "G" available

to: miss a cloud, miss a bird, miss a plane etc etc.

I'd imagine that the FAA's airspeed limits below 10k' become the biggest limiting factor for here in the States. It's easy to justify an extra 50KIAS over the 250 limit for manuverability and aircraft performance, but I can't imagine trying to explain a need to roll up initial at 400+ over a CONUS base.

Heck...

We "roll" up (well, 70 degrees at least) at 240 KIAS in the mighty Lear.

(And the lights from heavan shine down, and angels sing in the background...)

Back in the day the 10 would roll up direct to the Al Udeid TACAN (IIRC, whatever navaid was halfway down the runway) at 350 KIAS, 1000 feet or so, then crank up the bank to an impressive 30 degrees. The turn to downwind would take 20 miles or so. Impressive for us. Stupid 250 AMC speed limit

Standard fighter initial is 300 KCAS. Tactical initial (with wingman in 6K' line abreast) is 350 KCAS. The whole deal with airspeeds below 10,000 feet is waived due to tech order airspeeds (up to 350 KCAS for fighters). In combat you're cleared weird for Tac Initial - I came up Tac Initial at Incirlik at 600 KCAS on one sortie.

HD is correct that the Herk is 200 in training. However as Toro said in the "combat" faster is better. 280 to 300 was not uncommon during visits to the desert.

According to our IFT instructor (non-AF civilian) the overhead speed for the C-172 is 105 KIAS but then again he's has yet to have recieved the clearance to do one. "yeeaaaaaa, 46 Echo make left trafic for 32L." Silly CFI, tricks are for kids. :(

Toro, does the "E" have a KCAS gauge on board? I'm curious since I've never seen or heard of anyone flying other than Indicated or True.

The "indicated" AS that is displayed in the HUD can either be Cal, True, or Ground.
