Guest HighFlyer55 Posted February 13, 2005 Posted February 13, 2005 can you get DQ at brooks if you have a scar on your retina?
Guest HighFlyer55 Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 what about if your pupil has scaring from a one time case of uvietis? F-16PILOTMD I really appreciate your help
Guest F16PilotMD Posted February 14, 2005 Posted February 14, 2005 Again, yes, you CAN be DQ for this. Details, details, details...each case is different. But, if you're asking me CAN you be DQ....yes.
Guest tempL Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 (edited) Just got back from my civilian eye doctor today and gathered some information about my eyes. I am a sophomore in AFROTC and a pilot hopeful. Right: SPH -2.25 CYL -0.25 AXIS 175 Left: SPH -2.75 If I've read correctly I should be within waiverable limits? and well within lasik or prk pre-op limits? However, when my eyes were dilated he examined my retina and found a tiny scar on the bottom of my retina in my right eye. Is this cause for concern? He told me it was very minor and wouldn't affect a surgery decision, I'm just worried about and a future possible FC1 Thank you for yalls help in advance, much appreciated! -Ben edit: title grammar Edited June 17, 2008 by tempL
Toro Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Search the stickied topics and other vision threads for questions on vision limits and waivers. As for the scar, as long as it doesn't affect your vision, it wouldn't think it would be a factor. I have a scar on my left cornea that is clearly visible if you look close enough. I don't know exactly how it happened other than I noticed it near the end of a deployment to the desert. The only answer the doc had was that it possibly resulted from irritation due to sand getting into my eye. There was some medical term for it, but I don't remember what it was. At any rate, it hasn't affected my vision at all, so the doc told me not to worry about it.

The doc said it wouldn't ever be a problem if I wanted lasik or prk, and that it doesn't interfere with my sight. So hopefully that won't ever turn into a problem at brooks or anything
Guest P27:17 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 (edited) As to the retinal scar...it sounds like no big deal. Once you get to Brooks they'll do a thorough eval to make sure there's no disease or progressive conditions. But from what you posted it sounds relatively harmless. For the AF CRS program as it pertains to pilot wannabees... - PRK is acceptable up to (wag) -3.50 or -4.00 diopters (cyclo) - Anything higher (up to -8.00) will likely require LASIK - You can opt for LASIK for either refractive situation - Most folks will claim that LASIK is less painful (I had PRK and it wasn't too bad) - Irregardless of which CRS procedure you get...you have to wait a full year before going to Brooks So bottomline: The ONLY stipulation from the AF as it pertains to the type of surgery is your pre-op refraction...other than that it's a personal choice.
