Guest 17Driver Posted November 8, 2006 Posted November 8, 2006 Does having a hard cast on your hand definetly DNIF one from all AF aircraft until it's removed?
brabus Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 It's got to. Think about it...how could you perform ALL possible tasks with only one good hand? You can't move your wrist, your fingers are probably somewhat held back from full movement...no way you wouldn't be DNIF is my thought. But, I'm no flight doc.

Go to the desert long enough (sts) and you can get pretty good at performing "ALL" possible tasks with one good (sts) hand.
Toro Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 Most likely, but not necessarily. I broke my hand about two months ago and immediately after I had the cast put on, I went to the simulator to see how it would affect me flying and flipping switches. I had full mobility with the hand and no problem flipping switches, raisin gear, etc. When I told the flight doc this to see if I could get on flight status, he hemmed and hawed and basically said it would be up to the commander to let me fly. I didn't push the issue any further - I could only imagine if something happened, "Safety Mishap Board revealed..." However, I could see some commanders authorizing it if they were skosh on flying bodies and you were willing to fly. As soon as I had the hard cast removed and replaced with a soft cast, the doc put me back on flight status.
Guest F16PilotMD Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 No way, no how in a fighter from my standpoint. It just doesn't pass the common sense test for me. Cost:benefit is a no-brainer. In a heavy, I guess I'd at least listen to the argument, but still don't think I could sign off on it. Honestly, I've never had it happen. Only fractures I've dealt with have been big...no question about flying.
Guest doctidy Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 It would depend on the break, extent of the cast, time since break, what limitations you have w/ the cast on, and probably most importantly...how bad do we need you flying! I'd probably think about letting you do it more if we were in the sandbox and they needed you to fly...but it would really be hard to give you the thumbs up.
